Mariners including cash in Mets’ trade for Cano and Diaz, which should be final soon - Amazin' Avenue

The Mets will be receiving cash from the Mariners in their almost-final trade to acquire Robinson Cano and Edwin Diaz from Seattle, per a report from Jon Heyman. He also says that parameters still stand where we all left off last night, with the Mets sending Jay Bruce and Anthony Swarzak along with prospects Jarred Kelenic and Justin Dunn—plus possibly one more—to the Mariners. And that one more is still relief pitcher Gerson Bautista, says Andy Martino, who also mentions that Jeff McNeil was in the deal until the Mets decided they did not want to trade him.

Just how much cash the Mariners and sending to the Mets hasn’t been reported quite yet, and the amount will presumably play a role in the overall perception of the deal. Cano is set to make $120 million over the five remaining years of his contract, and while Diaz is still extremely affordable, he will eventually get arbitration raises. In 2019, shedding the salaries of Bruce and Swarzak is almost a complete wash salary-wise, and in 2020, Bruce’s salary accounts for more than half of Cano’s—before we have information on how much Seattle will cover.
