CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – North Carolina men’s basketball coach Roy Williams, who led the Tar Heels to three national championships, announced his retirement on Thursday morning.

Williams, a 1972 UNC graduate, just concluded his 18th season as the head coach at his alma mater. In addition to NCAA titles in 2005, 2009 and 2017, he led the Tar Heels to a 485-163 record, two other Final Fours, nine ACC regular-season championships and three ACC Tournament crowns.
The 70-year-old finished his head coaching career with a His 903 wins rank third all-time by a Division I head coach. Williams reached 900 wins in fewer games (1,161) and seasons (33) than any coach in NCAA history.
Williams told his players during a team meeting before the public announcement on Thursday. His final game at his eponymous court at the Smith Center was a 91-73 victory over rival Duke on Senior Night. Following the Senior Day speeches, Williams dropped to the ground and kissed the midcourt logo one last time, although he dismissed the action in his postgame press conference.
He was inducted in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2007. He is the second-winningest coach in UNC history and third in Kansas history and is the only coach with 400 wins at two schools. His 77.4 winning percentage is the sixth-highest in NCAA history.
Williams led UNC and Kansas to nine Final Fours, fourth most all-time, and won national championships in 2005, 2009 and 2017. He finishes his career ranked second in NCAA Tournament wins (79), second in No. 1 seeds (13), second in games (105), third in NCAA Tournament winning percentage (.745) and tied for fourth in NCAA championships. He was 29-1 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
His eight wins over AP No. 1 ranked teams are an NCAA record and he ranks second in NCAA history in 30-win seasons (12) and tied for fourth in 20-win seasons (29).
Williams led UNC to three ACC Tournament titles (2007, 2008, 2016) and nine ACC regular season championships. His teams posted the second-highest ACC road winning percentage all-time (.621) and third-most ACC road wins (90). He is third in regular season wins by an ACC coach (212). He is tied for fifth all-time with 18 regular-season conference championships at both UNC and Kansas.
He coached 32 NBA first-round draft picks, including 22 in Chapel Hill, as well as four National Players of the Year, six ACC Scholar-Athletes of the Year, 10 consensus first-team All-Americas, 17 first-team All-Americas and three Bob Cousy Award winners. He also is the only coach to coach two Academic All-Americas of the Year (Jacque Vaughn at Kansas, Tyler Zeller at UNC).
