On Tuedsay, NFL.com’s Daniel Jeremiah published his third mock draft — this one following the big San Francisco 49ers-Miami Dolphins-Philadelphia Eagles trades that shook up the draft’s first dozen picks.
The last time around, Jeremiah thought offensive tackles Penei Sewell, Rashawn Slater, Christian Darrisaw, Jaylen Mayfield and Teven Jenkins would be off the board before the Kansas City Chiefs picked Alabama center Landon Dickerson with the 31st pick. This time, Jeremiah thinks Slater, Sewell, Darrisaw, Jenkins and Dickerson will be gone — and he has the Chiefs taking a corner.
31. Kelvin Joseph • CB • Kentucky
Kansas City has always valued elite traits. Joseph is big, fast and explosive. He’s a little bit raw, but he could team up with L’Jarius Sneed to give the Chiefs two young, athletic cornerbacks.
The last time — in mid-February — we noted that Jeremiah could be onto something with his selection of the center Dickerson.
2020 undrafted free agent Darryl Williams is presently the only center signed to the team. Last season’s starter Austin Reiter — and backup Daniel Kilgore — will also be free agents.
But since then, the Chiefs have released both starting tackles, signed two free agent guards and a center — and re-signed offensive lineman Mike Remmers, who started in place of right tackle Mitchell Schwartz for most of last season.
So with tackles Samuel Cosmi, Dillon Radunz, Alex Leatherwood, Jaylen Mayfield and Liam Eichenberg still available, Jeremiah now goes with a cornerback? After the Chiefs re-signed starter Charvarius Ward in mid-March?
All due respect to Joseph — whom some evaluators see as a first-round talent (although the Arrowhead Pride Nerd Squad’s 2021 KC Draft Guide does not) — and few would argue the Chiefs shouldn’t try for a corner somewhere in the draft. But given the circumstances, would this be the best first-round move for Kansas City?
