Warrants have been issued for the arrests of New York Giants cornerback DeAndre Baker and Seattle Seahawks cornerback Quinton Dunbar by the Miramar, Florida police department stemming from an incident that occurred Wednesday, May 13. Baker has been charged with four counts of armed robbery with a firearm and four counts of aggravated assault with a firearm while Dunbar has been charged with four counts of armed robbery.
Per the police report, Baker took money and watches from the victims and with force and was armed with a semi-automatic firearm. Dunbar was assisting Baker in taking the money and valuables from the attendees at a party in Miramar, Broward County. The pair were allegedly hanging at a cookout when an argument ensued, resulting in Baker revealing a semi-automatic firearm. Baker allegedly Baker directed a third member, wearing a red mask, to shoot a person who entered the party -- but the gun was not fired.
Both Baker and Dunbar are believed to have taken over three timepieces -- including an $18,000 Rolex watch and a Hublot worth $25,000. Baker and Dunbar also took over $7,000 in cash. Two affiants did not see Dunbar with a firearm but one said the opposite.
A spokesperson for the Miramar Police told ESPN there have been discussions with at least one of the player's representatives about turning himself in, but neither have done so at this time. Dunbar's attorney, Michael Grieco issued a statement claiming that five witnesses can exonerate Dunbar and that delivered to the Broward State Attorney's Office sworn affidavits to that effect. However, prosecutors are still requiring that Dunbar turn himself in.
"I can't believe Miramar PD did a virtual touchdown dance without investigating further," he said.
One witness told police Baker and Dunbar lost over $70,000 at a party in Miami days earlier via gambling, some from high-stakes card games. Another witness said those involved in the robbery all left in three different vehicles, a Mercedes Benz, a Lamborghini and a BMW -- which were prepositioned for immediate departure from the scene of the crime.
The argument allegedly started over a gambling dispute. Neither player has been incarcerated.
The Giants have also released a statement on Dunbar's arrest, via Dan Duggan of The Athletic:
"We are aware of the situation. We have been in contact with DeAndre. We have no further comment at this time."
Duggan also reported Baker did not participate in the Giants' virtual meeting Thursday or any other meeting during the team's voluntary virtual OTAs this past week.
Baker, a first-round pick of the Giants in the 2019 NFL Draft, recorded 61 tackles and started 15 games for the Giants in his rookie season. He finished with eight passes defensed and allowed six touchdowns (opposing quarterbacks had a 116.2 passer rating targeting him). He was expected to be a starter on the 2020 defense after improving down the stretch of a rough rookie season with the addition of defensive coordinator Patrick Graham (and his man-coverage-heavy system) suiting Baker's skill set well.
Dunbar spent the first five seasons of his career with the Washington Redskins and posted a career-high four interceptions last season. Opposing quarterbacks had just a 68.4 passer rating targeting Dunbar in 2019 and he allowed three passing touchdowns. The Seahawks acquired Dunbar for the Redskins for a 2020 fifth-round pick in March.
