Georgia appeared to be set at the quarterback position when it got Jamie Newman to enroll as a graduate transfer in January, but things aren't always as they appear. Former USC quarterback JT Daniels announced on Thursday that he will be transferring to UGA in a bit of a surprising move.
Daniels is not a graduate and it is not yet known if he will be able to suit up for the Bulldogs in 2020. He's expected to seek immediate eligibility where he'd compete with Newman, Stetson Bennett IV, D'Wan Mathis, and Carson Beck for the starting job if the waiver gets approved. If that waiver doesn't go through, it would have no impact on Newman and Daniels would immediate become a strong contender for the starting job in 2021.
A one-time transfer with immediate eligibility is expected to pass via NCAA vote in the near future, but according to Jon Rothstein of CBSSports, it wouldn't take effect until the 2021-2022 season.
The former five-star prospect started 11 of 12 games as a true freshman in 2018 where he completed 59.5 percent of his passes for 2,672 yards, 14 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He finished that season with a bang, throwing for over 300 yards against the Trojans' two biggest rivals, UCLA and Notre Dame.
USC lost both games but Daniels completed 20 of 34 passes for 337 yards two touchdowns and two interceptions against the Bruins and connected on 37 of 51 passes for 349 yards and a touchdown against No. 5-ranked Notre Dame, a team that went on to make the College Football Playoff.
When USC's 2019 season opener rolled around, Daniels was the starter and was expected to thrive under new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Graham Harrell, who had brought in an "Air Raid" attack. He completed 25 of 34 passes for 215 yards, a touchdown and an interception against Fresno State before suffering a torn ACL and meniscus that ended his season.
In stepped true freshman Kedon Slovis who went on to complete almost 72 percent of his passes for 3,502 yards, 30 touchdowns and nine interceptions as the Trojans went 8-5 on the year.
Daniels will have three years to play three at UGA if he's eligible right away. If he has to sit a year, he'll have two years to play two. Newman would still be considered the favorite to win the starting job even if Daniels is eligible to play right away considering how the former Wake Forest triggerman was on campus for two months before the UGA campus was shut down due to the spread of the coronavirus.
