CINCINNATI (WKRC) - Marvin Lewis is out as head coach of the Cincinnati Bengals.

Tom Pelissero, reporter for the NFL Network and NFL.com, posted on Twitter Monday morning that Lewis informed his staff that owner Mike Brown has cut ties. Local 12 has confirmed the news.

Lewis coached 16 seasons without a playoff victory in Cincinnati. He was hired in 2003 and turned a 2-14 team into one that went 8-8. Lewis put up a 131-122-3 career record with four AFC North titles. The second-longest tenured head coach in the league behind the Patriots Bill Belichick, Lewis got the Bengals off to a 4-1 start this season only to finish 6-10.

The Bengals made the playoffs in five straight seasons and seven times overall. But the team has missed the postseason the last three years with nine non-winning seasons in his tenure.

Local12.com digital sports columnist and editor Richard Skinner offered his opinion on the topic following the 16-13 loss at Pittsburgh on Sunday:

This is about giving an apathetic fan base a fresh face, a new voice and a different direction (although I'm not sure Hue Jackson would do much to lift their spirits, either).

Not making a change would be a slap in the face of that fan base, which has been far too loyal for far too long.
