Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has been named the recipient of the 2018 Walter Camp Player of the Year award, it was announced Thursday evening on ESPN’s SportsCenter.
Other finalists for the award were quarterbacks Will Grier (West Virginia), Kyler Murray (Oklahoma) and Gardner Minshew (Washington State) and linebacker Josh Allen (Kentucky).
In 13 games, Tagovailoa has thrown for 3,353 yards and a school-record 37 touchdowns with just four interceptions on 199-of-294 passing (67.7 percent) this season. The sophomore is tied for second on the Crimson Tide’s career touchdown pass list with 48 and has thrown for 300 or more yards an Alabama-record five times this season. His 42 combined passing and rushing touchdowns are also an Alabama single-season record. His six total touchdowns (five passing, one rushing) against Auburn on Nov. 24 were also a school single-game record.
“I think if you look at the impact he’s made on the offense and just the consistency of our offense, I know that we’ve played some of the best defenses in the country and we didn’t slow more than we played maybe some lesser defenses. But I think that in every game our offense has been able to do what it takes to obviously be 13-0,” left tackle Jonah Williams said. “I think we have the all-time scoring record for Alabama and hopefully still have two games left if all goes as planned.
“So, I just think that he’s at the centerpiece of that, and there’s a lot of great parts around him -- he’d be the first to tell you that. But I think that him kind of being at the helm of that, it’s hard to top.”
Running back Derrick Henry was Alabama’s only recipient of the honor when he won it in 2015.
As the winner, Tagovailoa will receive his trophy at the Walter Camp Football Foundation’s 52nd annual national awards banquet on Saturday, Jan. 12, at Yale University’s Lanman Center.
Tagovailoa is also a finalist for two awards that will be handed out tonight on ESPN’s The Home Depot College Football Awards show at the College Football Hall of Fame -- the Maxwell Award and the Davey O’Brien Award. Tagovailao is a finalist for the Heisman Trophy, too.
