A's Chapman, Olson win Gold Gloves; Giants shut out

Like everything else about the 2018 baseball season, Sunday's Gold Glove announcements brought cheer to the east side of the bay and disappointment on the west.

The A's, whose surprising run toward an American League wild card was fueled in part by a great defensive improvement, broke a 12-year drought for Oakland infielders and took two Gold Gloves: first baseman Matt Olson and third baseman Matt Chapman.

But the Giants were shut out for the first time since 2014.

Brandon Crawford's reign as the National League Gold Glove shortstop ended after three years when he lost to first-time winner Nick Ahmed of the Diamondbacks. Crawford was one of the three finalists.

Buster Posey, who won his only trophy in 2016 and also was a finalist this year, lost to Yadier Molina, who won for the ninth time, his first since 2015.

A's shortstop Marcus Semien and second baseman Jed Lowrie were finalists as well but lost to the Angels' Andrelton Simmons and Red Sox's Ian Kinsler, respectively.

Chapman's first Gold Glove hardly was a surprise. As of mid-August, he led the majors at any position with a 19.5 SABR defensive index that counts for 25 percent of the Gold Glove formula. A vote of coaches and managers within each league counts for the other 75 percent.

Last year’s winner at third base, Evan Longoria, was traded to the Giants after the season and was not an NL finalist for an award that Nolan Arenado won for the sixth straight year.

Olson (5.8) and Semien (11.6) led at their respective positions as well, but Simmons' reputation - and three prior Gold Gloves - swayed the coaches and managers. Lowrie (4.9) ranked third among AL second basemen.

Oakland ended a Gold Glove drought dating to 2012, when outfielder Josh Reddick won. The A's had not had a winner on the infield since 2006, when Eric Chavez won the last of his six in a row at third base.

The A's haul reflects a significant improvement in their defense. In defensive runs saved, one of the stats used in the SABR index, they rose from last in the majors in 2017, at minus-42.4, to third best (37.7)

The Giants' defensive runs saved fell from 7.2 in 2017, when they ranked 14th in the majors, to 19.1 in 2018, seventh-worst in the majors.

Posey led all NL catchers with a 5.1 SABR defensive rating. But he might have been hurt in the manager/coaches vote by playing just 88 games behind the plate in an injury-plagued season.

Crawford was fourth among NL shortstops with a 4.9 rating, well behind Ahmed's league-leading 11.7.

Brandon Belt led the Giants overall at 6.9, the ninth best in the league at any position, but his season also was limited by injuries and he was not a finalist at first base. The Cubs’ Anthony Rizzo and the Braves’ Freddie Freeman finished in a tie and will share the award.
