Rob Gronkowski, who will not retire, thought of stepping away from NFL in training camp: reports

Rob Gronkowski will put his WWE career on hold.

The Patriots tight end is expected to return for the 2018 season, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, squashing any retirement talks.

Rapoport said Gronkowski pondered retirement and a potential WWE or acting career, but the “belief now is that Gronkowski will continue his football career with the Patriots.”

He added not to expect a grand announcement from Gronkowski regarding his future, though.

WWE reportedly interested in giving Rob Gronkowski a contract

Gronkowski has two years and $17 million remaining on his current contract with roster and workout bonuses worth up to $2 million.

The 28-year-old tight end said after the Patriots’ loss to the Eagles in Super Bowl LII that he would “definitely” have to think about his future, opening the door to retirement speculation.

That speculation picked up steam again this week after NBC Sports Boston’s Tom E. Curran said on a Boston radio program that Gronkowski had been contemplating retirement back in training camp.

Curran told “Boston Sports Tonight” that the atmosphere in Foxborough was “starting to wear on (Gronkowski) mentally and physically... He seriously considered stepping away from the game in training camp.”

Burglary reported at home of Patriots' Rob Gronkowski

“They still need to have a hell of an air-clearing at Patriot Place to get these guys back,” he added.

Gronkowski further fueled the rumors of a potential WWE career on Tuesday morning when he tweeted a link to gronknation.com on a story about former NFL player Dean Muhtadi, who left football for a WWE career with help from Gronkowski’s father.

Gronkowski, a second-round draft pick in 2010 out of the University of Arizona, has already piled up a handful injuries throughout his career.

He has had two back surgeries dating back to college, a knee surgery to repair a torn ACL and most recently sustained a concussion in the AFC Championship games.

He has also missed time with a broken forearm, a sprained knee, chest injury, hamstring injury and further complications with his back.

Gronkowski had 69 catches for 1,084 yards and eight touchdowns in 14 games for the Patriots last season.
