Oddsmakers aren’t expecting Michigan to win a third-straight game over a top-15 opponent.
The Wolverines (12-1) opened as a 7 ½-point underdog against Georgia (12-1) after the No. 2 versus No. 3 College Football Playoff matchup was announced Sunday afternoon. The two teams will play Dec. 31 in the Orange Bowl in Miami.
Other sportsbooks, like DraftKings and Caesars, aren’t aligned with the opening number and currently list Georgia as a 7-point favorite.
There is no recent history between the two programs, with the last matchup coming in 1965. Georgia was widely considered the best team in college football this season until it was smacked by Alabama 41-24 in the Southeastern Conference title game. The Bulldogs’ defense entered the game allowing less than seven points per game, but it had no answer for Alabama’s offense that racked up 536 total yards.
Meanwhile, Michigan has been surging since its 37-33 road loss to Michigan State on Oct. 30. It has scored more than 40 points in three straight games, including a 42-3 victory over No. 15 Iowa in Saturday’s Big Ten championship.
“Michigan has looked really strong lately with the win over Ohio State and then dominating Iowa as the biggest favorite of the day, so I’m not surprised to see the number where it is,” Adam Pullen, Caesars Sportsbook assistant director of trading, said in a release. “You all of a sudden saw Georgia look human, giving up 41 points. I don’t know if Michigan’s offense is as dynamic as Alabama’s. Still, when you put that seed of doubt in people’s minds, there will be some now who are skeptical of Georgia. But I don’t anticipate much movement with the line. In fact, I don’t see much volatility with either of these two games outside of a point move either way.”
No team has a better record against the spread this season than Michigan, which is 11-2. Georgia is 8-5 against the spread in 2021.
In the other semifinal matchup, No. 1 Alabama opened as a 13 1/2 point favorite against Cincinnati.
