Thursday’s “First Call” updates us on some new homes for a few former Steelers. The Green Bay Packers have some injury issues to watch as their game against the Steelers approaches. And Ravens head coach John Harbaugh gushes about Chuck Noll as his team closes in on a Steelers record.
Ravens rushing record?
The Baltimore Ravens are on the cusp of tying a long-held record by the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The Ravens have rushed for at least 100 yards as a team every game for 42 consecutive weeks. As researched by Steelers Depot, the Steelers currently hold that record at 43 games, from Dec. 8, 1974 to Dec. 12, 1977.
Ravens coach John Harbaugh was asked about the potential accomplishment Wednesday.
“I remember I was a Browns fan, and we never beat them,” Harbaugh said. “I remember that. It probably had to do with rushing for all those yards. I was a kid. So, I remember Franco Harris and [former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach] Chuck Noll. I really do admire Chuck Noll. I really have a lot of respect for him. I read a lot of the things that he said. So, sure, that’s something that counts for something. It’s kind of not really in the forefront of our thinking right now at all, but it’s something, for sure.”
The Ravens will try to tie that mark Sunday against the Denver Broncos. The Denver defense has allowed only 26 points in three games, yielding just 59.3 yards on the ground per contest. However, their opponents (Giants, Jaguars, and Jets) are a combined 0-9.
Packers problems
Like the Steelers, the Green Bay Packers are dealing with injury problems as the two teams prepare for their matchup at Lambeau Field.
Left tackle Elgton Jenkins and receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling missed Wednesday’s practice and were listed on the initial injury report as “did not participate.”
Via PackersWire.com, coach Matt LaFleur said Jenkins and Valdes-Scantling will both need the full week to determine their playing status in Week 4.
“I would say it’s going to take the entire course of the week to determine whether or not he’ll be available,” LaFleur said of Jenkins.
Valdes-Scantling is in the “same boat” according to LaFleur.
The Wright stuff
Former Steelers kicker Matthew Wright has a new gig. He’ll be kicking Thursday night for the Jacksonville Jaguars against the Cincinnati Bengals.
Wright is going to replace struggling kicker Josh Lambo. He missed practice Tuesday and Wednesday for undisclosed reasons and was listed on the game report as “not injury related.”
Lambo has missed five kicks in three games this season, including three field goals and two extra points. He was sidelined 12 games last year with a hip injury that required surgery, but he said before Week 1 that his confidence “is as high as ever” despite also missing kicks in training camp and the preseason.
Wright played three games for the Steelers last season and made all three field goals and all seven extra points he attempted.
Wright signed a futures contract with Detroit in January and spent the offseason and two weeks of training camp with the Lions. Detroit waived him Aug. 10.
I Love L.A.
It didn’t take long for former Steelers outside linebacker Jamir Jones to find work. He was picked up by the Los Angeles Rams off waivers.
The Steelers released the pass rusher after Game 3 of the NFL season. It appears his snaps will be absorbed by Derrek Tuszka.
This isn’t the first time an ex-Steelers outside linebacker has been picked up by another team this year. The New York Giants also nabbed sixth-round pick Quincy Roche, who was cut right before NFL rosters had to be trimmed to 53 players.
Jones had one quarterback hit and three tackles this season.
