This Korean baseball team looks a lot like Detroit Lions - Detroit Free Press

You might have heard – or even seen – but baseball returned this week.

Not Major League Baseball, but the Korean Baseball Organization.

The KBO began their 2020 season on Monday evening in front of no fans in South Korea. A couple familiar faces were part of the day’s slate – former Tigers shortstop Dixon Machado hit a home run for the Lotte Giants and former Tigers right-hander Warwick Saupold came within an out of a complete game for the Hanwa Eagles – and the opening game was shown on ESPN.

The KBO is the United States’ baseball reality now – locally, we have the Virtual Tigers, of course – with six games a week on the ESPN networks.

Though there are a few former Tigers in the mix – lefty Chad Bell is teammates with Saupold on Hanwa – which team should you root for?

May we suggest the Samsung Lions, who have another local connection in addition to the obvious: The Lions’ color scheme is strikingly similar to, well, the Detroit Lions’ Honolulu blue-and-silver look.

There are no former Tigers on the Samsung Lions, who have official team cheerleaders with short biographies (including … blood types?) on their website, and there is one big difference: The Lions are one of the most successful teams in KBO history, with eight championships to their name.

The Samsung Lions next play the NC Dinos at 5:30 a.m. on ESPN2 (which will be replayed at 3 p.m.).

So if you want to root for a winning Lions team in the Honolulu blue-and-silver, tuning into an upcoming KBO game might be your best bet – and you can get your baseball fix in, too.
