President Trump wants ‘big, big stadiums loaded with people’ for sports amid coronavirus - NJ.com

Golf made its return to live television following the coronavirus on Sunday, with the broadcast of a skins game in Florida featuring Rory McIlroy, Dustin Johnson, Matthew Wolf and Rickie Fowler.

During NBC’s broadcast of the match, Mike Tirico interviewed President Donald Trump. As you would expect, Trump has bold expectations for golf during the COVID-19 crisis. Per Yahoo Sports:

“We really want to see it get back to normal,” Trump told Tirico. “So when you have all of those thousands, tens of thousands of people going to majors and going to golf tournaments, we want them to have that same experience. We don’t want them having to wear masks and be doing what we’ve been doing for the last number of months. That’s not getting back to normal. We want to be back to normal where you have the big crowds and they’re practically standing on top of each other and they’re enjoying themselves. Not where they’re worried. But in the meantime, they do the social distancing.”

The next live golf event will be on Sunday, May 24, when five-time NFL MVP Peyton Manning and 15-time major champion Tiger Woods face six-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady and five-time major champion Phil Mickelson in “Capital One’s The Match: Champions for Charity.”

But Trump told Tirico he hopes golf is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the return of sports in the age of the coronavirus.

“We want to get sports back. We miss sports. We need sports in terms of the psyche of our country. We want big big stadiums loaded with people. We don’t want to have 15,000 people watching Alabama-LSU, as an example.”

Trump said last month he wants fans back in the stands as early as August.

Golf returned to the Garden State more than two weeks ago, when N.J. Gov. Phil Murphy lifted his ban on the game. That included Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, N.J.. Trump owns 17 golf courses, including three in New Jersey: Bedminster, Colts Neck and and Pine Hill. Golf World magazine recently named Trump’s Turnberry Scotland property the top golf course in Great Britain and Ireland for 2020.

On Sunday, NJ Advance Media’s Jonathan Salant reported Trump is expected to return to Bedminster this summer. That’s because the U.S. Secret Service signed a contract “worth as much as $179,370 to rent golf carts at the president’s golf club, according to a database maintained by the General Services Administration. ... The contract runs from May 12 through Oct. 31.”

As for Sunday’s skins game, the event raised more than $5 million for coronavirus relief funds.

The final carryover gave McIlroy and Johnson $1.85 million for the American Nurses Foundation. Fowler, who made seven birdies, and Wolff made $1.15 million for the CDC Foundation.

The PGA Tour plans to return on June 11 with the Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas.
