The 2020 NFL schedule is out!
With all 17 weeks scheduled and accounted for, it’s time to look at who won and who lost with this year’s slate, including Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, Baltimore Ravens, Las Vegas Raiders, Dallas Cowboys and NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.
Here are this year’s NFL schedule winners and losers.
WINNERS
When isn’t Belichick a winner? Time will tell how competitive the Patriots can and will be without Tom Brady, but hosting Miami in Week 1 gives New England a good chance to go 1-0. That’s especially true if the Dolphins hand the starting job to No. 5 overall pick Tua Tagovailoa. The reason: Belichick is 8-0 against quarterbacks making their first career start.
Baltimore Ravens
The defending No. 1 seed in the AFC won’t leave the Eastern time zone after Week 2. It’s short plane trips and bus rides for John Harbaugh’s team.
Dallas Cowboys
The NFC East will likely come down to the Eagles and Cowboys again. Over the last two years, the division-deciding December match up was won by the home team. Dallas hosted in 2018. Philadelphia hosting in 2019. In 2020, Week 16 will feature Philadelphia at Dallas. In a close division, it’s a big deal.
It’s easy to rag on “Monday Night Football” for the product and yearly match ups. But while we still don’t know who will be calling the games, we know this: 2020 has a compelling slate of games to end each week. Some of the best: Saints at Raiders (Week 2), Chiefs at Ravens (Week 3), Rams at Buccaneers (Week 11), Seahawks at Eagles (Week 12), Bills at Patriots (Week 16)
Fans that watch from home
The NFL built in contingencies in the event of season delays due to the coronavirus pandemic. But much like free agency and the NFL Draft, nothing will likely get in the NFL’s way of playing games. As for fans in the stands? That’s up in the air and out of the NFL’s hands. Fans that watch from home will turn out winners.
LOSERS
Las Vegas Raiders
Yes, the four prime-time games are fun. Yes, opening up a new stadium will bring juice. But six 1 p.m. ET starts is brutal for a young team trying to find their way.
The start of this schedule is brutal: at Buffalo, vs. San Francisco, at Indianapolis. That feels like 0-3, and a hole the Jets might not be able to dig out of in 2020.
New Orleans Saints
Any time a team has three consecutive road games, it’s cause for alarm. For the Saints, a brutal stretch away from New Orleans presents itself from Week 12-14: at Denver, at Atlanta and at Philadelphia. The Saints will need a hot start to overcome that gauntlet.
Bye weeks
Unless the NFL can go forward without a hiccup, don’t count on the current bye week for each team to hold up. Among the contingencies put forward by the NFL: Every Week 2 match up is between teams that share a bye. That means, say, if Week 2 is postponed or canceled, both the Eagles and Rams share a Week 9 bye to make up the game.
Fans that go to games
The more you dig, the more you can find ways the NFL looked to solve problems before they become problems in the midst of a schedule during the coronavirus pandemic. The league won’t rule out fans, but forward thinking on how and when games are even played is at the forefront, which means fans in the stands is not.
