The legal battle between Zion Williamson and his former agent Gina Ford is going to get a lot more interesting if a settlement isn’t reached. Lawyers for Ford told Pat Forde they are prepared to depose Mike Krzyzewski as part of the discovery process to prove that Williamson received impermissible benefits while at Duke.
“We are setting depositions as we speak,” said attorney Alvin Pittman. “We can assure you that we are about to hit the road of discovery like you wouldn’t believe.”
Asked specifically if they intend to depose Krzyzewski, the winningest coach in men’s NCAA Division I basketball history, fellow attorney Willie Gary said, “We are leaving no stones unturned, if you get my message.”
Williamson originally signed a deal with Ford’s company, Prime Sports Marketing, but backed out to sign with Creative Artists Agency. To get out of his deal with Prime Sports, he sued Ford, claiming the contract was void because it violated North Carolina’s Uniform Athlete Agents Act since Prime Sports Marketing is not a registered agent there. In response, Ford sued Williamson for breach of contract, claiming that he was not protected by the Uniformed Athlete Agents Act because he received illegal benefits at Duke. Specifically, Ford wants answers from Williamson, his mother, and his stepfather about the house they lived in while he was at Duke, along with other gifts, money, and potentially a car he received during his time as a Blue Devil. The NCAA has reportedly already investigated the Williamsons’ living situation in Durham, and on Sunday, Duke referenced its own previous investigation.
“As soon as Duke was made aware of any allegation that might have affected Zion Williamson’s eligibility, we conducted a thorough and objective investigation which was directed by individuals outside the athletics department. We found no evidence to support any allegation. Zion thrived as both a student and an athlete at Duke, and always conducted himself with integrity and purpose.”
Zion and his family will surely settle the lawsuit before Coach K has to answer questions, but man, it’s a nice thought.
