Ryder Cup tracker: Scoring updates from Friday's fourball and foursome matches

Captain Jim Furyk and his U.S. team have a long night of strategizing ahead.

The Americans didn't just get swept 4-0 in afternoon foursome matches for the first time at the Ryder Cup, they got walloped.

Sergio Garcia and Alex Noren beat Phil Mickelson and Bryson DeChambeau 5 and 4 as the Europeans took a 5-3 lead on the first day of the biennial competition. It was a huge turnaround for the Euros, who were 1-3 in the morning fourballs.

Garcia made Thomas Bjorn look brilliant for choosing him as a captain's pick. Playing in his ninth Ryder Cup, Garcia improved to 10-3-3 in foursomes.

Francesco Molinari and Tommy Fleetwood were the only European pairing to play both matches — and win. In the afternoon, playing in the anchor match again, Molinari and Fleetwood took down Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth in a convincing 5 and 4 win.

10:10 a.m. (ET): Sergio Garcia and Alex Noren are tearing up the course right now. After squaring the first hole with Phil Mickelson and Bryson DeChambeau, the Europeans won six of the next seven holes with five birdies to take a commanding six-shot lead to the ninth hole.

The Europeans are dominating across the board, leading all four matches by at least two holes.

9:24 a.m. (ET): In the afternoon foursomes, Rory McIlroy is heating up while the Europeans have taken an early 3-1 lead in the matches in progress. McIlroy birdied the sixth to cut the deficit against Bubba Watson and Webb Simpson to one shot. It was Rory's first birdie of the day.

Playing with Ian Poulter, McIlroy is starting to look more like himself after a slow start in morning fourballs. On the seventh, Poulter pulls it to all square and the Americans are not looking good. The U.S. trails by 3 in two matches (Johnson-Fowler and Mickelson-DeChambeau).

USA leads 3-1 after fourballs

Match 1

Brooks Koepka/Tony Finau vs. Justin Rose/Jon Rahm

Rose’s birdie on the first hole gave the Europeans an early one-up lead that stayed until Tony Finau’s eagle on the par-4 sixth. It was short-lived as Rose and Rahm won the next two holes and kept at least a one-shot lead from there on out. But on the final green, Rahm misses his putt from about 18 feet and Europe concedes. USA wins, 1-up.

Match 2

Dustin Johnson/Rickie Fowler vs. Rory McIlroy/Thorbjorn Olesen

This match stayed all-square until an eighth hole par by Olesen. Fowler won the next two, then Johnson claimed two of the next three to take a 3-up lead with five to play. USA wins, 4 and 2.

Match 3

Jordan Spieth/Justin Thomas vs. Paul Casey/Tyrrell Hatton

Spieth caught fire early, and the U.S. pairing looked to be cruising to a 3&2 victory until consecutive birdies from Casey and a birdie from Hatton squared the match on No. 13. On the 18th, Spieth makes a 4-footer for par to take the point. USA wins, 1 up.

Match 4

Patrick Reed/Tiger Woods vs. Francesco Molinari/Tommy Fleetwood

This match flipped back-and-forth all morning. Team Europe lead for four of the first six holes, but consecutive birdies from Woods gave the Americans a brief lead. Molinari makes his putt on 17 as the Euros birdied 15,16 and 17. Europe wins, 3 and 1.

Pairings for afternoon foursomes

Henrik Stenson and Rose vs. Johnson and Fowler

McIlroy and Ian Poulter vs. Bubba Watson and Webb Simpson

Sergio Garcia and Alex Noren vs. Phil Mickelson and Bryson DeChambeau

Molinari and Fleetwood vs. Thomas and Spieth

Woods-Reed back to all square

6:24 a.m. (ET): Francesco Molinari makes a big birdie putt on the par-4 12th to even up the match with Tiger Woods and Patrick Reed. Molinari is rock solid as he and Tommy Fleetwood win the 11th and 12th under pressure.

Molinari is looking for his first Ryder Cup match win today, but he's actually been on two winning European teams. Like Woods, Molinari is back in the Ryder Cup as a player for the first time since 2012.

Woods-Reed go to 2-up

5:50 a.m. (ET): Here comes Patrick Reed. His chip-in birdie on the 10th gets the Americans to 2-up in his match against Francesco Molinari and Tommy Fleetwood. "C'mon!" Reed yells as he gets fired up. It's the first time Reed and Tiger Woods have been paired in the Ryder Cup and it's looking good for now. The Americans lead in three matches.

Team USA takes the lead

5:14 a.m. (ET): The score went from 3-1 in favor of the Europeans to 2-1-1 for the Americans in a matter of minutes.

After trailing for four of the first six holes, Patrick Reed was conceded a birdie when Tommy Fleetwood and Francesco Molinari both failed to make par on the 7th hole. That match is now back to all-square.

Par was good enough on No. 9 for Rickie Fowler, who squared up his match with Dustin Johnson against Rory McIlroy and Thorbjorn Olesen after the Euros lead for just one hole. Another par on 10 went on to give the U.S. its first lead of that match.

Spieth on fire

4:43 a.m. (ET): Jordan Spieth didn’t make the Tour Championship field, the only American player who wasn’t at East Lake last week.

It made no difference in the opening holes of the Ryder Cup on Friday morning. Spieth had the hot putter early, giving the Americans their only lead at the moment. His birdie putt on the fifth gave the U.S. a 2-up advantage against  Europe's Tyrrell Hatton and Paul Casey.

At 25, Spieth is already a Ryder Cup veteran, coming in with a 4-3-2 record playing on the last two teams. He's paired with Justin Thomas, No. 4 in the world rankings, who can hardly be called a rookie, but is making his Ryder Cup debut.

And on the seventh, Spieth birdies again to get to 3-up, still the only lead for the U.S. Spieth has birdied five of his first seven holes.

Rookie with the first eagle

4:04 a.m. (ET): Tony Finau cards the first eagle of the day at Le Golf National, holing his approach shot from the rough on the sixth hole, a par 4 of 290 yards, to even up his match.

Finau is one of three rookies on the U.S. team in this Ryder Cup and is paired with Brooks Koepka in the opening match against Justin Rose and Jon Rahm.

Rose also had a chance at eagle on six but couldn't get his long putt to drop.

And they're off

3:36 a.m. (ET): As all four matches got under way Friday morning in the 42nd edition of the Ryder Cup, Jordan Spieth provided the opening fireworks for Team USA as he nearly holed out for eagle on the opening hole, a par 4 of 419 yards.

Paired with his good friend Justin Thomas, Spieth birdied from about 3 feet to give the Americans a 1-up lead in their fourball match against Europe's Tyrrell Hatton and Paul Casey.

On the daunting first hole with grandstand seating of 7,000, Patrick Reed earned the biggest boos from the boisterous crowd, as you might expect from Captain America. Playing with Tiger Woods in the final pairing, Reed hit his second shot in the water and Woods missed his birdie putt. Francesco Molinari didn't blink as he made his birdie putt to give Europe a 1-up lead.

Tiger got the match back to even on the par-3 second after nearly holing his tee shot. He gets a conceded birdie.
