Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray isn’t starting on Saturday against Baylor, according to a tweet from the Sooners’ backup quarterback’s mom.
Austin Kendall’s mom, Kimberly Kendall, has a protected Twitter account. But multiple media outlets, including The Oklahoman, have reported that she tweeted her son would start for the Sooners against the Bears. The night before, this local report said:
Lotta rumors that QB Murray suspended. My sources indicate nothing major ... but possibly would not start v Bay for minor violation — possibly something like late to practice. Nothing serious long term, as some suggested. Nothing confirmed. @news9

A suspension for the beginning of a game wouldn’t be out of line with how Lincoln Riley’s disciplined his quarterbacks in the recent past. Baker Mayfield earned what amounted to a two-play suspension late in 2017, after various hijinks during a game at Kansas the week prior. Murray made the start in place of the Heisman winner that day.
Murray, a redshirt junior, is a former five-star recruit who’s made himself a Heisman candidate in the early weeks of 2018. Kendall, a redshirt sophomore, is a former four-star himself and used to be Mayfield’s primary backup, while Murray was sitting out the 2016 season under NCAA rules after his transfer from Texas A&M. He enters Week 5 24-of-32 passing for his career, for 231 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions.
We’ll update this post as more information becomes available.
