BOSTON — It was, without question, the worst moment of the Yankees’ season.
Still, Aaron Boone stayed positive.
And Yankees fans weren’t having it.
On Twitter, fans tore into the rookie manager for not showing more emotion, more displeasure, more anything following a disastrous four-game sweep at the hands of the Red Sox at Fenway Park.
The nadir came with Thursday’s 5-4 defeat. It wasn’t just another loss. Instead, the Yankees lost in 10 innings and walk-off style. They handed closer Aroldis Chapman a three-run lead in the ninth inning, only to watch him melt down. They gave the ball to Jonathan Holder in the 10th … and, for the second time this series, he blew it, surrendering Andrew Benintendi’s game-winning single up the middle.
All the ugly meant that the Yankees would fall 9 1/2 games back of the Red Sox in the American League East and just 2 1/2 games ahead of the A's for first place in the Wild Card.
“This is a test we’re going through right now,” Boone said. “We’re experiencing obviously some adversity, just with being dinged up a little bit roster-wise. But we’ll also come out on the other side tougher for this and this weekend, we’ll look back on and hopefully be able to grow even more as a club. So, we will move on from this, and we’ve got a big series starting (Monday).”
He added, “A tough way to obviously end a tough weekend. But we can’t let this define what’s been a great season for us knowing that you’ve got to get on that plane and get to Chicago right away.”
Take it away, Twitter …
