Steve Pearce joins exclusive club with three HR in Red Sox-Yankees game

On Thursday night, Boston's Steve Pearce became just the sixth player to hit three home runs in a game between the Yankees and Red Sox – a rivalry that dates back to 1903, spanning 2,185 regular-season games.

With Pearce's historic night, each team has now had a player accomplish the feat three times.

Prior to July of this year, it had only happened four times in the storied history between the rivals. On July 1, Aaron Hicks hit three homers in a contest at Yankee Stadium.

No Red Sox player had hit three home runs against the Yankees until 1997, when Mo Vaughn did it at Fenway Park. In 2004, Kevin Millar went deep three times in an 8-7 loss in Boston.

The first Yankee to have a three-homer game against the Red Sox was Lou Gehrig in 1927 and it didn't happen again until Mark Teixeira in 2010. A month ago, Hicks etched his name in history with three homers in the Bronx.
