UFC President Dana White said Wednesday he will strip Conor McGregor of the UFC lightweight championship.
Speaking to TMZ Sports, White said the upcoming fight between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson at UFC 223 in April will be for the title McGregor eventually vacates.
White also addressed the potential of a McGregor vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr. rematch. While he said it would only make sense in the UFC, he added that the sides aren't in active negotiations and that there's "nothing done."
The 29-year-old McGregor has not fought in the UFC since beating Eddie Alvarez for the lightweight title at UFC 205 in November 2016.
McGregor instead shifted his focus toward a boxing match with Mayweather in August 2017, which the Irishman lost by 10th-round knockout.
White mentioned August or September as possible return dates but said "Conor might never come back" due to how much money he has already made.
Despite the uncertainty, White expressed his hope that McGregor will face the winner of the UFC 223 clash between Nurmagomedov and Ferguson.
In 24 career MMA fights, McGregor is 21-3 with 18 victories by way of knockout.
