NFL Draft 2024 live updates: Day 2 second and third round picks, trades, grades and news from Detroit - Yahoo Sports

The first round of the 2024 NFL Draft is in the books and it was the most offensive-heavy first round in the history of the annual player selection meeting. 23 offensive players — highlighted by 14-in-a-row to start the draft — was an all-time record.

While there was little drama with the first pick, where Caleb Williams went to Chicago, heads turned at the tail end of the top 10 when the Atlanta Falcons picked quarterback Michael Penix Jr. in the most surprising pick of the night. The Falcons signed Kirk Cousins to a four-year, $180 million contract earlier this offseason.

Quarterbacks also tied a record with six of them going in the first round, matching the legendary 1983 class. All of the quarterbacks went in the top 12, culminating with Bo Nix to Denver with that 12th pick.

Next up on Friday, are rounds two and three of the NFL Draft, and the Buffalo Bills have pick No. 33 overall, and will get the draft going again at 7 p.m. ET from Detroit.

April 26 — Second and third rounds, 7 p.m. ET
April 27 — Fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh rounds, noon ET

The 2024 NFL Draft will be broadcast live on NFL Network and also ESPN, ABC and ESPN Deportes.

You can stream it on ESPN+, YouTube TV, Hulu+ Live TV, Sling TV and Fubo TV.

It's being held in the area around Campus Martius Park and Hart Plaza in downtown Detroit, less than a mile from Ford Field, home of the Lions.

Live112 updates

  • Expert Commentary: Pick No. 56 — Marshawn Kneeland

    • Draft Grade: B-

    • Pre-Draft Rank: 40

    • School: W. Michigan

    • Height: 6' 3"

    • Weight: 267

The Cowboys needed to add more juice to their pass rush and found someone who has the potential to be a solid No. 2 across from Micah Parsons for the long term. Kneeland had first-round rumors, but this is a probably a more appropriate spot for him.

  • Expert Commentary: Pick No. 55 — Patrick Paul

    • Draft Grade: A

    • Pre-Draft Rank: 34

    • School: Houston

    • Height: 6' 8"

    • Weight: 331

The Dolphins needed to continue bolstering their offensive line and they got a potential decade-long starter in Paul. Paul is a big-bodied freak athlete who has real potential to be a good player in the NFL. Love this.

  • Expert Commentary: Pick No. 54 — Michael Hall Jr.

    • Draft Grade: A

    • Pre-Draft Rank: 39

    • School: Ohio St.

    • Height: 6' 3"

    • Weight: 290

This is a great spot to take a 300-pounder that runs a 4.7 40-yard dash. He didn’t have a ton of production in college, but he’s got the tools to be an impact defensive tackle in the NFL. This could be a major boom pick for the Browns.

  • Expert Commentary: Pick No. 53 — Ben Sinnott

    • Draft Grade: B-

    • Pre-Draft Rank: 100

    • School: Kansas St.

    • Height: 6' 4"

    • Weight: 250

Sinnott is a quality tight end prospect that should round out a solid skill group for Jayden Daniels in his first year. It’s not the sexiest pick, but it’s a pick that will help the Commanders on offense.

  • The two newest Arizona Cardinals went up against each other in college and Marvin Harrison Jr. is excited to join Max Melton in Arizona.

  • Expert Commentary: Pick No. 52 — Adonai Mitchell

    • Draft Grade: A+

    • Pre-Draft Rank: 24

    • School: Texas

    • Height: 6' 2"

    • Weight: 205

Mitchell was viewed as a potential first-round prospect and he fell all the way to the back half of the second round. The Colts need to continue to add weapons around Anthony Richardson as he works his way back from injury, and now they have Mitchell to play with Michael Pittman and Josh Downs.

  • Expert Commentary: Pick No. 51 — Zach Frazier

    • Draft Grade: A

    • Pre-Draft Rank: 38

    • School: West Virginia

    • Height: 6' 3"

    • Weight: 313

The Steelers continue their major youth movement up front. First Broderick Jones last season, then Troy Fautanu in the first round of this year's draft, and now Frazier to man down their center spot. The Steelers clearly wanted to fix the offensive line this year and they’ve certainly moved in the right direction.

  • Bryce Young struggled in Year 1 at the helm for the Panthers. Carolina brass is now bringing in rookie running back Jonathon Brooks from Texas, but how much can he help the Panthers offense? Our Yahoo Sports Draft Live Crew offers their takes:

  • Expert Commentary: Pick No. 50 — Mike Sainristil

    • Draft Grade: A

    • Pre-Draft Rank: 82

    • School: Michigan

    • Height: 5' 9"

    • Weight: 182

Shout out to the 2024 All-Juice Team! The Commanders grabbed a stud prospect to play in the slot for them. Sainristil is a competitive force who's not afraid to come downhill and hit people in the mouth. He’s got pretty solid chops in man coverage too. Nice pickup.

  • Expert Commentary: Pick No. 49 — Kris Jenkins

    • Draft Grade: C+

    • Pre-Draft Rank: 71

    • School: Michigan

    • Height: 6' 3"

    • Weight: 299

Jenkins is a solid defensive lineman who can play all over the line, but might not be a true standout at any position. Still, Jenkins has the talent and opportunity to develop into a steady presence for the Bengals.

  • First of all, Where can I get one of these? And second, surely restaurant on the Las Vegas Strip is already figuring out how to cook one of these up for game days. Eat up, big man. Eat up.

  • Expert Commentary: Pick No. 48 — Mason Smith

    • Draft Grade: B-

    • Pre-Draft Rank: 91

    • School: LSU

    • Height: 6' 5"

    • Weight: 306

Smith is a talented player with the upside to be something special, but it’s not quite there yet for him. He is in a nice situation with Josh Allen and Travon Walker on the outside, but will need some coaching up to get where he wants to be in the NFL.

  • Expert Commentary: Pick No. 47 — Tyler Nubin

    • Draft Grade: B

    • Pre-Draft Rank: 55

    • School: Minnesota

    • Height: 6' 2"

    • Weight: 199

This is probably about the right range for Nubin. He's the first safety drafted and he's a quality replacement for Xavier McKinney right away. This is the exact type of player that the Giants needed to add to their back seven.

MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA - NOVEMBER 04: Tyler Nubin #27 of the Minnesota Golden Gophers competes against the Illinois Fighting Illini in the second half at Huntington Bank Stadium on November 04, 2023 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. • Expert Commentary: Pick No. 46 — Jonathon Brooks

    • Draft Grade: D+

    • Pre-Draft Rank: 72

    • School: Texas

    • Height: 6' 0"

    • Weight: 216

The process here for the Panthers is a bit strange. Brooks is a quality running back prospect, but trading up for a player who will still be getting up to full strength as a rookie is a bit odd. Of course, if Brooks is back to pre-injury form, then this is moot. It just seems awfully risky from a pick allocation sense.

  • Expert Commentary: Pick No. 45 — Edgerrin Cooper

    • Draft Grade: C

    • Pre-Draft Rank: 49

    • School: Texas A&M

    • Height: 6' 2"

    • Weight: 230

The Packers felt like they needed a linebacker and they got one in Cooper. He’s very fast and has some coverage ability, but his play in the box leaves some room for growth. Cooper might be a lower floor player as far as NFL responsibilities are concerned, but he has the speed to be a playmaker early on.

COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS - SEPTEMBER 03: Edgerrin Cooper #45 of the Texas A&M Aggies walks off the field after defeating the Sam Houston State Bearkats during the second half at Kyle Field on September 03, 2022 in College Station, Texas. (Photo by Carmen Mandato/Getty Images)

  • Expert Commentary: Pick No. 44 — Jackson Powers-Johnson

    • Draft Grade: B

    • Pre-Draft Rank: 27

    • School: Oregon

    • Height: 6' 3"

    • Weight: 328

This is probably a good spot for Powers-Johnson, who was announced as a guard instead of a center. Regardless, the Raiders needed bodies on the interior and Powers-Johnson is a credible player to add at guard. Very steady starter.

  • Expert Commentary: Pick No. 43 — Max Melton

    • Draft Grade: B+

    • Pre-Draft Rank: 88

    • School: Rutgers

    • Height: 5' 11"

    • Weight: 187

The Cardinals traded back and got a cornerback with massive upside. The Cards are still building out their roster for the long term, so it makes sense that they would take someone who can pay off in a big way in the future. Brick by brick.

  • Expert Commentary: Pick No. 42 — Kamari Lassiter

    • Draft Grade: A

    • Pre-Draft Rank: 44

    • School: Georgia

    • Height: 6' 0"

    • Weight: 186

Just like McKinstry in the last pick, Lassiter isn’t a burner. However, he’s a physical, talented cornerback that has the ability to tackle in the open field and come in as a Day 1 starter at nickel for the Texans. This is a great pick.

  • Expert Commentary: Pick No. 41 — Kool-Aid McKinstry

    • Draft Grade: A

    • Pre-Draft Rank: 32

    • School: Alabama

    • Height: 6' 0"

    • Weight: 199

The Saints traded up to stop the slide of McKinstry, getting a cornerback to continue to round out what’s a very competitive group for the Saints. McKinstry was once viewed as a first-round pick, so this might be a good value pickup for the Saints — despite their need to continue to spend future assets.
