Draymond Green considered retirement, said NBA commissioner Adam Silver talked him out of it - The Athletic

Draymond Green considered retiring from the NBA following his latest suspension and commissioner Adam Silver talked him out of it, the Golden State Warriors star said in the newest episode of his podcast, “The Draymond Green Show.”

“I told him, ‘Adam this is too much for me,'” Green said in the episode, which was released Monday. “‘It’s all becoming too much for me and I’m going to retire.'”

Green said that Silver convinced him to stay in the NBA.

“Adam said, ‘You’re making a very rash decision and I won’t let you do that,'” Green said.

Green, 33, was suspended indefinitely in December after striking Suns center Jusuf Nurkić in the face during the Warriors’ Dec. 12 matchup against Phoenix, the sixth suspension of his NBA career. Green was also suspended for five games in November and one game during the 2022-23 playoffs in April.

The league reinstated Green on Saturday following a 12-game suspension. Green underwent counseling for several weeks and held progress meetings with the league and Warriors.

“The antics I can leave behind,” Green said.

Green said he and Silver had a long conversation. He praised Silver, saying he is “thankful for playing in a league with a commissioner like Adam who’s more about helping you than hurting you.” Green said he talked with former Warriors general manager Bob Myers “two times a day” during the suspension.

“Our relationship goes far beyond him being my general manager,” Green said. “Going through things like this shows what it means to be a true friend.”

Green said that he let the Warriors organization down, along with the NBA and his family. On what he’s learned since his suspension, Green said that he made a “commitment to be a champion of change,” accepting that there is “a place for growth.”

The Warriors are 17-19 and are 7-6 since Green’s suspension. Golden State next plays Wednesday at home against the New Orleans Pelicans. In 15 games, Green is averaging 9.7 points, 5.5 rebounds and 5.8 assists per game on 49 percent shooting from the floor.

Is there importance to the retirement comment?

No. Green is on the first season of a new $100 million contract. The Warriors never expected him to walk away. He’s back in the building. The suspension has been lifted. He is expected to practice and scrimmage this week in an effort to get cleared by lead medical decision maker Rick Celebrini as quick as possible. The Warriors are a bottom-10 team on defense.

They need him on the floor trying to plug leaks and get this team back into the playoff mix. As long as he can stay off the suspension list, that’s the expectation. — Anthony Slater, Warriors beat writer

Was there a podcast comment that did have significance?

I thought it was interesting Green admitted he must stop making excuses for some of his behavior, admitting for the first time that he can cut out some of his “antics” yet remain the same firebrand player and emotional on-court leader that has made him a Hall of Fame performer for this fading Warriors dynasty. That’s crucial.

Because the Warriors need all that Green is still capable of giving as a defensive engine, tactical mind and offensive playmaker. But they also can’t have any more of the ejections, suspensions or even in-game argumentative distractions. — Slater
