Mets won't have to pay Edwin Diaz as he recovers from WBC knee injury - New York Post

PORT ST. LUCIE – The Mets won’t be paying Edwin Diaz during his time on the injured list, after he underwent surgery Thursday to repair the patellar tendon in his right knee.

Instead, the responsibility falls on MLB (through insurance provisions) because Diaz’s injury occurred while he was participating in the World Baseball Classic.

Diaz is scheduled to receive $17.25 million this season, which would be covered in full by MLB’s insurance if Diaz doesn’t return to pitch this year. Mets general manager Billy Eppler has indicated the right-hander is most likely facing an eight-month rehab.

Mark Teixeira returned to the Yankees from the WBC in 2013 with a wrist injury and MLB insurance provisions covered his salary for the two months he spent on the IL.

Diaz’s knee injury occurred during an on-field celebration following Puerto Rico’s victory over the Dominican Republic on Wednesday.

He was carried off the field by teammates and then exited the field via wheelchair.

“I was hugging our coaches in the dugout. Then when we looked up, Edwin was on the ground,” Puerto Rico manager Yadier Molina told reporters afterward. “I didn’t know. I didn’t know how to act, I didn’t know how to — what to say.

“I mean, I didn’t know. It got me for a surprise.”

It’s now up the Mets to fill the void left by one of the game’s top closers.

“Obviously, tough blow. No doubt about it,” Justin Verlander said about Diaz. “One of the best closers in baseball, if not the best. Losing that is not easy. But I don’t think any team — I can’t think of any team that has gone through an entire season without a major blow.

“It’s a tough game to stay healthy. It’s just tough to have it at this point of the year. The optimism is so high and everybody is ready to go, when that happens, it’s tough.”
