NCAA bracket predictions: College basketball model releases surprising March Madness 2023 tournament picks - CBS Sports

USATSI

The 2023 NCAA Tournament bracket will begin on Tuesday when No. 16 seed Southeast Missouri State faces No. 16 seed Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in a First Four matchup in Dayton. The March Madness 2023 schedule ramps up when No. 8 seed West Virginia takes on No. 9 seed Maryland at 12:15 p.m. ET on Thursday to kickstart a four-day stretch full of games. West Virginia has advanced to the second round of the March Madness bracket four times since 2015, making the NCAA Tournament field 11 times in 15 seasons under head coach Bob Huggins. Will his experience be the difference when the Mountaineers face the Terrapins in the NCAA basketball bracket 2023?

Another intriguing matchup on Thursday pits No. 9 seed Illinois vs. No. 8 seed Arkansas. Which team should you pick to advance in your 2023 March Madness bracket groups in this critical 8 vs. 9 matchup? Before making any 2023 March Madness bracket predictions, be sure to check out the 2023 NCAA Tournament bracket picks from the proven computer model at SportsLine

The SportsLine Projection Model simulated the entire 2023 NCAA Tournament 10,000 times. It has absolutely crushed its March Madness picks, beating over 92% of all CBS Sports brackets two of the last four tournaments. The model also nailed three teams in the West and South Region Sweet 16 last year, including No. 5 seed Houston.

It knows how to spot an upset as well. The same model has produced brackets that have nailed 18 first-round upsets by double-digit seeds. It also nailed some massive upsets two years ago, including predicting the championship game between Gonzaga and Baylor and hitting Houston's Midwest Region win even though the Cougars weren't the No. 1 seed.

There's simply no reason to rely on luck when there's proven technology to help you dominate your 2023 March Madness picks. Now, with the 2023 NCAA bracket revealed, the model is simulating the matchups and its results are in. You can only see it over at SportsLine.

Three 2023 March Madness bracket games to watch

One of the most intriguing 2023 March Madness matchups to watch: No. 8 Maryland vs. No. 9 West Virginia in the South Region. The Terrapins bounced back from a disappointing 2021-22 campaign with a successful first season under head coach Kevin Willard, making it back to the Big Dance. Charlotte transfer Jahmir Young leads four double-digit scorers with 16.1 points and 4.7 rebounds per game. West Virginia's top four scorers are all seniors and the Mountaineers force nearly 15 turnovers per game, so that is one factor that could decide this contest.

Another 2023 March Madness matchup to keep an eye on: No. 5 San Diego State vs. No. 12 Charleston Cougars. The Aztecs won the Mountain West title this season and have one of the top defenses in college basketball, allowing 63 points per game. They took Arkansas and Saint Mary's down to the wire in non-conference play and beat Boise State and Nevada in the Mountain West. Charleston climbed as high as No. 18 in the AP Top 25 this season, racing out to a 21-1 record. The Cougars have enough firepower to test San Diego State's defense, as they rank No. 15 in points per game (80.8).

No. 4 Virginia vs. No. 13 Furman is another critical matchup in the South. The Cavaliers have not been out of the first round since winning the title in 2019, and they were the first No. 1 seed to lose to a No. 16 seed in 2018. They are led by a pair of senior guards, though, and have the ninth-ranked defense in the country. Furman punched its ticket when it won the Southern Conference Tournament under head coach Bob Richey. The Paladins have experience as well, featuring senior guard Mike Bothwell and senior forward Jalen Slawson. You can see the model's 2023 NCAA bracket picks here.
