“It’s going to be frustrating, but I like Jared Goff.”

Peyton Manning’s facial expressions ranged from excited supporter to concerned father as he and brother Eli narrated Goff’s second game with the Detroit Lions via their “Monday Night Football” telecast.

A self-described “quarterback defender,” Peyton Manning spent the night offering plenty of constructive criticism on Goff’s overall approach. And one theme ran throughout: Goff’s only 26, but his career just got knocked on its head. Let’s see how he gets up before rushing to any further judgment.

“Let’s face it, he got punched to the gut by getting traded,” Manning said during the second half of the Lions’ 35-17 loss in Green Bay. “I got cut (in Indianapolis). I got a choice of where I wanted to go play, (with Denver). Jared gets traded to a team he knows nothing about. It’s a punch to the gut. He knows (Matthew) Stafford and the Rams are off to a good start. He’s handled it like a pro. He’s a mentally tough kid and you can build an offense around him. It’s going to take a little time. Won’t be today or this season.

“But, I’m telling you, Jared Goff has what it takes to be a championship quarterback.”
