Ohio State Sugar Bowl practice observations, who's on the field - 247Sports

In a normal college football season with a normal bowl game situation, Bucknuts would have an army of media members on the scene in New Orleans ready to cover the Sugar Bowl. This would mean face to face interviews (a concept that almost feels foreign at this point in 2020) and a media day that would have made every member of both Ohio State and Clemson available for interviews.

Also included in the bowl week media coverage is getting to watch some of both teams practice. While it's only about 15 minutes or so typically, and that's usually a lot of stretching and warming up, it's something and more than we get during the regular season. That won't happen this year, but thanks to our friends at the Sugar Bowl, we do get a small look inside the Buckeyes' practice this week.

The media was provided with a video from the Buckeyes' practice on Wednesday. While it's only 2:54 and is more guys getting ready to practice than actually practicing, we'll take what we can get. And in 2020, when the major concern is COVID-19 and who may or may not have tested positive for the virus and therefore not be available for the game, 2:54 is plenty of time for those who look closely.

That is exactly what I did (along with some help from Dave Biddle), scanning through this video (sometimes going frame by frame) to see which Scarlet and Gray players were on the field. Since this is something the readers eagerly want to know, we have provided the full video below, as well as the list of players and coaches we saw and a few observations.

Players at practice:

It's important to note that this short video cannot show us all players, so just because someone isn't listed doesn't mean he wasn't on the practice field.

Quick thoughts

  • While it's a crazy year, it's time to stop reading into every little Instagram post. If you don't know what I'm talking about, you're better for it.
  • Quarterback Justin Fields has a brace on his right thumb after injuring it in the Big Ten Championship Game. While it was just a quick snippet of Fields throwing, he did not seem to wince at all when holding the ball and had no apparent issues.
  • After leaving the Big Ten Championship Game with an injury, running back Master Teague is in practice. He lined up with Fields during stretching, which sometimes means he's the No. 1 back but also sometimes doesn't mean anything.
