Dwayne Haskins goes unclaimed on waivers after release by Washington - Yahoo Sports

Dwayne Haskins is a free agent.

The second-year quarterback released by the Washington Football Team on Monday went unclaimed on waivers Tuesday. That means that 31 teams had a chance to claim the 2019 first-round draft pick and his contract by Tuesday’s deadline, and they all passed.

Haskins is now free to sign with the team of his choice — or, to be more precise — a team that’s willing to take a chance on him.

Claim would have come with guaranteed money

Haskins had two years remaining on the four-year, $14.4 million deal he signed as a rookie. He has $4.2 million remaining in guaranteed bonus money that nobody was willing to take on after his release by Washington.

Haskins will likely find a suitor this offseason to sign him on different terms. But the fact that nobody was willing to take on the $4.2 million risk demonstrates how far he’s fallen from a first-round prospect in less than two seasons of NFL football.

Haskins struggled in Washington

Haskins never delivered on his promise as a first-round pick in Washington. In 16 games including 13 starts, Haskins completed 60.1 percent of his passes for an average of 175.3 yards per game with 12 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. He took 49 sacks for a loss of 345 yards. Washington went 3-10 in the games that he started.

He was benched twice this season by first-year Washington head coach Ron Rivera. His second benching arrived Sunday amid a poor effort against the Carolina Panthers. It also arrived on the heels of Haskins’ second COVID-19 protocol violation of the season. That violation led to Rivera stripping him of his captaincy.

Some of Haskins’ struggles are being attributed to the longstanding dysfunction in Washington. A team that believes it has the culture in place to develop him into an effective NFL player will surely take a chance that Haskins still has upside.

There just likely won’t be much guaranteed money involved.
