The clip of Ed Orgeron’s sideline meltdown went viral before the game ended as his moment of anger encapsulated a 55-17 LSU loss to Alabama.
Captured by photojournalist Derron Daquano, the 23-second clip was approaching a million views by Sunday morning. It came after DeVonta Smith’s second long touchdown catch of the second quarter, a 61-yarder that followed a 65-yard score.
Orgeron explained his feeling in that headset-slamming moment of rage.
“Our plan was, for most of the game, double team (Smith),” He said. “That was one of his times that we wasn’t. Then we got beat one on one, that’s nobody’s fault. We went into the game to stop No. 6 and you have to give them credit. Now, sometimes we had him doubled and he made some great big plays. It was just frustrating seeing a player have 300 yards in the first half.”
Smith, from nearby Amite, caught a third touchdown later in the quarter while surrounded by LSU defenders. He finished the game with 231 receiving yards on eight catches with three scores.
Crimson Tide players would later mock Orgeron’s 2019 post-Alabama speech while sharing the video of his 2020 sideline anger.
Linebacker Jabril Cox said there were some communication issues in the Tiger defense. The plan was to always double team Smith.
“Early on in our calls we were able to,” Cox said. “We just got mixed up in a couple switch routes and sometimes the safety was leaning towards the other way. But, early on we were able to do it, but they just got behind us a few times and he was able to make a catch and score a touchdown.”
Cox also praised the “athletic” Alabama offensive line who had little trouble getting into space, freeing Tide running backs for 265 rushing yards and a 6.2-yard average.
