The Detroit Lions just drafted Kerryon Johnson two years ago, but couldn’t pass up on another talented running back Friday night in the second round.
What the Lions are getting in Georgia’s D’Andre Swift, according to ESPN analysts, is a powerful runner who also will shine in the passing game and can handle his own in pass protection.
Quite a talented pickup at No. 35 overall.
“This guy is a three-down running back,” ESPN’s Booger McFarland said. "He comes from an NFL style down in Georgia. He understands how to set his blocks up, how to be patient and burst through the line of scrimmage.
“Make no mistake about it, what he does best is in the passing game. You talk about a running back that runs the angle routes, understands how to set up screens. You pair him with Kerryon Johnson, and now you have a 1-2 punch.”
In 2019, Swift rushed for 1,218 yards and seven touchdowns. He averaged 6.5 yards per carry in his career at Georgia.
ESPN’s Mel Kiper noted that Swift had just 440 carries in college while sharing the load with other talented running backs, so there’s “not much tread on those tires coming into the NFL.”
“Matthew Stafford is going to love D’Andre Swift," Kiper said. "His running style, he’s very athletic. Catches the ball out of the backfield. A complete running back.”
Detroit is slated to have two picks in the third round tonight, Nos. 67 and 85 overall. The Lions drafted Ohio State cornerback Jeff Okudah with the No. 3 overall pick Thursday night.
