A stoic Harrison Barnes, sitting on the Mavericks' bench, looking on as reports of his trade circulated during Dallas' game against the Charlotte Hornets on Wednesday night at American Airlines Center.
The move stirred up reaction from every corner of the NBA, and even prompted Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James to go on an Instagram rant about the hypocrisy of teams making business decisions vs. players doing what's best for them.
What many wondered, though, was whether Barnes knew if the trade had unfolded as he watched his now-former teammates compete in a game.
Yes, he was in the know.
The trade was consummated during the second half, as Barnes played 8:49 of the third quarter. A source told SportsDay's Brad Townsend that Barnes was informed of the trade possibility before the game, but he elected to play against Charlotte, anyway.
He was informed late in the third quarter that the trade had gone through. He didn't return to the game, though he remained on the bench and cheered his ex-teammates to a 99-93 victory.
And that probably didn't come as a surprise to those around Barnes, whose character has always been praised by the organization.
After practice Tuesday, Barnes was asked whether the Mavericks' trade with New York for Kristaps Porzingis affected his view of where he stood with the team and where the franchise was headed.
His response takes on a new meaning after Wednesday's events.
"Nah," Barnes said. "I have a pretty transparent relationship with the organization, with the front office. My job is still the same, to go out there, play every single night, be consistent, be solid. Especially with a lot of moving pieces, try to provide stability every single night. ... And hopefully that can continue."
It'll continue with the Kings.
