The NBA was wrong to “point out,” much in the way the mob used to “point out” it would be good for your bar to pay them their standard vig from your income if you know what’s good for you, that the New Orleans Pelicans faced potential fines if they didn’t play Anthony Davis the rest of this most bizarre season in the Big Easy.

(The previous sentence was not unlike a simile, comparing two otherwise completely different entities for dramatic effect; I am not saying the National Basketball Association’s business practices are similar to those of organized crime’s. That preceding sentence was written to, hopefully, stave off the inevitable phone call from Olympic Tower in the coming hours.)
And, the NBA was completely right to tell the Pelicans that they couldn’t keep Davis on the shelf the rest of the season.
Contradictory? No.
The league is trying mightily to dance on the head of a pin in its claim that it didn’t directly...
