Is Tom Brady the Oldest Quarterback To Play In a Super Bowl? - The Cheat Sheet

They say Father Time catches up with everyone but some are wondering if that will ever happen to Tom Brady. The New England Patriots quarterback is still playing like he’s in his prime, against players half his age, and continues to win.

The athlete, who many already consider the greatest of all time, will look to add to his legacy and win his sixth Super Bowl on Feb. 3, 2019, when his team takes on the Los Angeles Rams led by 24-year-old quarterback Jared Goff. Most people have their money on the older guy. So just how old is Brady and is he the oldest quarterback to ever play in a Super Bowl? Here are the answers to those questions plus the age and identity of the oldest player in the entire league.

How old is Tom Brady?

Tom Brady was born in San Mateo, California, on Aug. 3, 1977, making him 41 years old.

The signal caller played his college ball at the University of Michigan and was selected by the Pats in the sixth round of the 2000 NFL Draft. Sunday marks the Patriots’ 11th Super Bowl appearance. It’s Brady third straight and ninth overall. His first Super Bowl was actually against the Rams on Feb. 3, 2002. He was named MVP of that game after leading the team on a drive that capped off the upset. Brady was 24 years old at the time and became the youngest quarterback ever win a Super Bowl (a record he held until Ben Roethlisberger won at the age of 23).

Now, 17 years later, the Patriots are back in the Super Bowl with the same quarterback and head coach, against the same team they beat all those years ago. These days though the Rams reside in another city and have a totally different roster and head coach.

The answer to that burning question is yes. Brady is the oldest quarterback to play in a Super Bowl. We’ll have to wait and see the outcome of Super Bowl LIII but currently the oldest quarterback to ever win the big game is Peyton Manning, who did it with the Denver Broncos at the age of 39.

The oldest overall player to appear in a Super Bowl is former Indianapolis Colts kicker Matt Stover when he was 42.

Who is the oldest player in the NFL?

While Brady is the oldest quarterback in the league, he is not the oldest player. His former teammate and Colts kicker Adam Vinatieri has several years on him.

The 46-year-old Vinatieri has been in the league since 1996, won four Super Bowls, and has been selected to three Pro Bowls so no one questioned the Colts’ decision to give him a contract extension. Vinatieri will turn 47 next season and it’s anyone guess if Brady will find himself playing even longer than the placekicker.
