A three-team deal that would have sent Trevor Ariza to the Washington Wizards and Kelly Oubre to the Memphis Grizzlies is dead over which Brooks -- MarShon or Dillon -- the Phoenix Suns had believed they were getting, league sources said.
The Grizzlies and Suns didn't communicate directly on the trade, using Washington as a conduit in coordinating the three-team deal, sources told ESPN. Washington believes it was told Dillon Brooks in conversations with Memphis. The Grizzlies insist they told Washington it was MarShon.
Memphis would not put Dillon Brooks in the trade, sources said, and in the end, the agreement was called off.

Dillon Brooks, 22, is in his second season out of Oregon, averaging 6.8 points, 2.1 rebounds and 0.9 assists this season for the Grizzlies. MarShon Brooks, 29, has spent the past two seasons with Memphis, appearing in 24 games as a reserve this season.
If the deal had been completed, the Wizards would have acquired Ariza while sending Oubre to Memphis, league sources said. The Suns would have acquired Wizards guard Austin Rivers as well as a Brooks and Grizzlies teammate Wayne Selden. Memphis also would have sent Washington a 2020 second-round pick and a 2019 conditional second-round pick via Boston.
Ariza has been at the center of trade talks in recent days. The Lakers were previously in talks with the Suns to acquire him, with the teams working to reach an agreement with a third team that would take on Los Angeles guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope as part of a potentially larger deal, sources said earlier this week.
Ariza is one of the most important trade assets for the Suns -- and their best chance to bolster their backcourt and gain assets. Most contending teams are interested in acquiring the 33-year-old, who was an important contributor to the Houston Rockets in recent seasons.
Ariza signed a one-year, $15 million deal with Phoenix this summer. Any trade for him could not be completed officially until Saturday, when players who were signed in summer free agency become eligible to be traded.
Information from ESPN's Zach Lowe was used in this report.
