In one of the more bizarre incidences, the Washington Redskins released D.J. Swearinger on Christmas eve.

Swearinger was very critical of Washington’s play-calling. He felt they should have been more aggressive and put players into a position to succeed. He was actually very candid about the entire situation in an interview right after his release.

It didn’t seem like anything he was saying was wrong.

From an on the field standpoint, Swearinger is one of the most aware players that you will see. Not many defensive backs understand route combinations. Swearinger does. He would be big in the development for the Chargers young defensive backs. He could teach them how to watch film. This is far from a “veteran leadership” move. Swearinger is a very good player and he has been going on three years now. I don’t know how much stock you hold in this, but he’s a Pro bowl alternate. He led Washington in pass breakups and interceptions. Swearinger also forced three fumbles.

I doubt he will make it all the way to the waiver order where the Chargers could claim Swearinger. Effective September 24th, all claims are based on 2018 records. With the Chargers having one of the best records in the league, this would seem like a long shot. That would be incredible if he did, though.
