Chiefs beat Ravens 27-24 in overtime thriller at Arrowhead - Arrowhead Pride

Both Spencer Ware and Tyreek Hill were injured in the first half. But both players showed heart and courage, coming back to make key plays in the second half as the Kansas City Chiefs overcame two missed field goals in regulation and defeated the Baltimore Ravens 27-24 in a thrilling overtime game at Arrowhead Stadium. With losses by both the New England Patriots and Houston Texans on Sunday, the Chiefs now hold a two game lead in the AFC.

First quarter

The Ravens won the opening coin toss and elected to defer to the second half, giving the Chiefs the ball to start the game.

Following a touchback, Patrick Mahomes opened with a short pass to Demetrius Harris, who gained two yards after stumbling. Then Ware gained five up the middle, and Travis Kelce converted the first down with an eight-yard reception. Ware was dropped for no gain, and Kelce picked up another first down with a 13-yard catch that put the Chiefs into Ravens territory. After an incompletion to Damien Williams, Demarcus Robinson couldn’t bring in a pass on the left sideline, and a deep pass intended for Hill was overthrown. That forced a Chiefs punt, which the Ravens fair-caught at their 17-yard line.

The Ravens started with a five-yard keeper from quarterback Lamar Jackson. The Ravens converted the first down with a 12-yard play-action pass to Michael Crabtree on the left sideline. Gus Edwards gained three on an inside run, and then Mark Andrews couldn’t bring in a pass. On third-and-7, Chris Jones broke through and sacked Jackson for a seven-yard loss, which forced a Ravens punt that Tyreek Hill returned six yards to the Chiefs 25-yard line.

Jones’ sack marked his ninth consecutive game with at least one sack, which set a new Chiefs franchise record. Jones also became the first player to do so since Dwight Freeney in 2008.

Ware gained five on an inside run, and Hill got a first down with a six-yard run around left end. Chased out of the pocket on the next play, Mahomes could not find an open receiver. He kept the ball on second down, gaining two yards. Then Kelce leapt to catch a 17-yard pass that gave the Chiefs a first down and a foothold in Baltimore territory. Chris Conley gained seven with a short pass and a broken tackle. Another short pass to Ware gained nine yards and gave the Chiefs their next first down.

Kelce leapt for another catch that gave the Chiefs 15 yards and a first down at the Ravens 13-yard line. Damien Williams gained a yard, and then Mahomes pass to Kelce went incomplete. But Marlon Humphrey was called for defensive pass interference, which gave the Chiefs a new set of downs at the one-yard line. On the next play, Damien Williams breezed through the middle for a touchdown, making the score 7-0 with 3:03 remaining in the first quarter.

Starting at their 25 after a touchback, the Ravens gave the ball to Edwards for an eight-yard run, followed by an off-tackle run by Jackson that gained 21 yards and put the Ravens across midfield. Edwards gained seven yards up the middle, followed by an off-tackle run by Kenneth Dixon that gained 14. Edwards got the ball again and gained 11 yards — putting the Ravens in the red zone — and Jackson kept it again for another nine yards.

Second quarter

With a handoff to Edwards that gained three and a two yard run by Dixon, the Ravens were in the end zone, evening the game at 7-7 with 14:17 left in the second quarter. The Ravens drive consisted of eight consecutive running plays, and consumed just 3:46.

Another touchback gave the Chiefs the ball at their own 25-yard line. Mahomes couldn’t connect with Hill on a deep pass on first down. Harris gained 10 yards on a pass from Mahomes, and the Chiefs got another 15 yards when Humphrey was flagged for unnecessary roughness. That put the Chiefs just past midfield. Ware caught a pass good for five yards, and then ran inside right, breaking tackles to gain nine yards and a first down. Another Ware carry gained two, and a pass to Kelce fell incomplete. On third-and-8, the Chiefs tried a screen pass to Hill, but Terrell Suggs knocked the pass away. That forced a 51-yard field goal attempt that Harrison Butker pushed wide right, and the Ravens took over at their own 41-yard line.

Edwards gained four yards up the middle, and Jackson kept it for a gain of three. The Ravens converted with a 10-yard pass to Willie Snead, but Dan Sorenson was called for unnecessary roughness on the play, giving the Ravens another 15 yards. Edwards gained two yards inside, and Jackson’s pass to Ty Montgomery was incomplete. But on third-and-8, Jackson found John Brown for a 14-yard gain that gave the Ravens a first down at the Chiefs 11. Montgomery was stopped short on two straight plays, bringing up third-and-9. The Chiefs went all-in on a blitz, and Jackson’s pass went nowhere. That forced a 28-yard field goal by Justin Tucker that gave the Ravens a 10-7 lead with 7:08 left in the half.

The Chiefs started at the 25 after a touchback, and Mahomes found Hilll open on the left side in a well-executed run-pass-option play that gained 18 — plus another 15 when Patrick Onwuasor was called fro roughing the passer. Ware gained eight yards off left tackle, and gained a first down with another three yards up the middle. Ware was then stopped for no gain, and Mahomes was sacked for a nine-yard loss, which brought up third-and-19. Hill leapt to catch a bullet, spun and powered through a tackle to gain a first down at the Ravens 19-yard line. Damien Williams gained four yards up the middle, Mahomes tried Anthony Sherman with a pass to the left flat — which Sherman uncharacteristically dropped — and then hit Kelce with a 15-yard touchdown pass that put the Chiefs ahead 14-10 with 2:37 left in the half.

Chris Moore gave the Chiefs a scare with a 47-yard kickoff return, but thanks to a holding penalty on Onwuasor, the ball came back to the Ravens 18-yard line. Dixon gained 15 yards off left tackle, and Jackson gained two on a keeper around left end at the two-minute warning.

When play resumed, Edwards was stuffed on a run up the middle, bringing up thrid-and-8. Under pressure, Jackson looked for Crabtree — but threw behind him — bringing up a Ravens punt, that Hill returned seven yards to the Chiefs 19-yard line.

With 1:36 remaining — and one time out — Mahomes found Robinson on the left for a nine yard gain before he was pushed out of bounds. Mahomes hit him again for 17, and then went to Ware on the left sideline, who broke a tackle and ran for 31 yards. Knocked out of bounds with a hard hit by Eric Weddle, he went to the bench for treatment.

The next play was called dead when Suggs was called offsides. The Mahomes hit Damien Williams with a four-yard pass, and another to Kelce that gained three and a first down at the Ravens 12. After throwing away a pass under pressure, Mahomes found Robinson with a short pass. Robinson managed to fight his way past the sticks, but he was ruled down at the Baltimore six-yard line. Mahomes was forced to throw away the ball on third down, so with four seconds left, Butker kicked a 24-yard field goal to send the teams to half time with the Chiefs leading 17-10.

Third Quarter

Following a touchback, the Ravens started with a 16-yard pass to Snead, and a nine-yard keeper from Jackson — but James Hurst was called for holding on Jackson’s run, and the play was called back. The Ravens got it back when Jackson escaped heavy pressure and found Dixon for a 21-yard gain that gave them a first down in Chiefs territory. Edwards got six, Jackson threw incomplete to Moore, and Edwards run up the middle was marked just short of a first down. At the Chiefs 39 — with less than a yard to go — the Ravens decided to try for it on fourth down, but Edwards was stopped cold, and the Chiefs took over.

Mahomes tried a deep pass to Robinson, but overthrew him. A short pass to Hill gained seven yards. On third-and-3, Hill was called for a false start, pushing the Chiefs back five yards. On the next snap, Mahomes tried a short pass to Hill, but it was intercepted by Chuck Clark, who returned it to the Ravens 42-yard line. Matt Judon was called for unnecessary roughness on the play, pushing the Ravens back to their own 27.

Edwards started with a seven-yard gain up the middle. Jackson gained three with a keeper that gave the Ravens a first down. Jackson got two yards with a scramble. Dixon gained nine up the middle for another first down, and then on the next play, eight more — plus an encroachment penalty on Derrick Nnadi — that was good for another first down in Kansas City territory.

Jackson’s gained six yards around right end, and then tried a pass to Brown that went incomplete. His next pass went to Snead, and it was good for a five-yard gain. Then Jackson ran for two, and then passed to Crabtree for eight yards. That gave the Ravens a first down at the Chiefs 18. Edwards went up the middle for four and Jackson missed a pass to Montgomery that brought up third-and-6. Jackson kept the ball, but was stopped by Dee Ford after only a four-yard gain. That made it fourth-and-2 at the Chiefs 10, and the Ravens decided to go for it. Jackson found Tim Williams open on the right side, and Williams made it to the right pylon for a touchdown, evening the score at 17-17 with 3:10 remaining in the third quarter.

Spencer Ware returned to the game after a touchback, and gained 13 yards up the middle on the first play of the drive. Mahomes hit Robinson with a five yard pass, and Ware went up the middle again for 12 yards and another first down past midfield. Then Ware carried for three, and Damien Williams gained five, bringing up third-and-2. Williams was not able to convert with a one-yard-run as the quarter ended.

Fourth Quarter

The Chiefs elected to go for it on fourth down, and converted with a two yard handoff to Sherman — his first of the season. Under pressure on the next play, Mahomes threw the ball away, but was called for intentional grounding. Mahomes then found Kelce for a 17-yard gain that was nullified by a defensive holding penalty on Onwuasor. Under pressure, Mahomes hit Hill with a spectacular throw, but Hill was unable to hold on to the ball. Damien Williams gained two up the middle. Then Mahomes hit Ware with a screen pass that Ware turned into a hard-fought 10-yard pass that was called back when Andrew Wylie was called for an illegal block. On the next play, C.J. Mosley sacked Mahomes for a five-yard loss, and the Chiefs had to punt. Dustin Colquitt’s punt was downed at the Baltimore nine-yard line.

Edwards got three yards inside, Jackson hit Snead for a 16-yard gain, and picked up six yards on a keeper around right end. Edwards got four yards up the middle for a first down. Jackson went incomplete to Snead, and then found Crabtree for an 11-yard gain. But Crabtree was called for offensive pass interference, which brought up second-and-20. A short pass to Montgomery gained only a yard, Ravens were penalized for illegal substitution, and Jackson couldn’t complete a pass to Andrews on third down. Sam Koch’s punt went out of bounds at the Chiefs 22.

Starting the next drive with 6:50 remaining in the game, Mahomes had to throw the ball away after being flushed from the pocket. Then he found Robinison for a five-yard gain, and was sacked for an eight-yard loss, forcing a Chiefs punt.

Colquitt’s punt was returned 10 yards to the Ravens 30. But there were offsetting penalties on the play, and fourth down was re-played. Colquitt’s second punt was returned by Cyrus Jones for 55 yards, putting the Ravens in business at the Chiefs 14-yard line. After runs by Edwards and Jackson that gained five yards, Jackson found Brown in the end zone, and the Ravens led 24-17 with 3:04 left in the game.

The Chiefs started at the 25 after another touchback. Ware gained six yards off right tackle, and three more up the middle. Another handoff to Ware gave the Chiefs five yards and a first down. Mahomes hit Damien Williams for a 14-yard gain, but the play was nulified by an illegal formation penalty on Eric Fisher. Kelce had a catch good for six yards, and Hill had another for six more on the other side of the two-minute warning, bringing up third-and-3. But Ware was stopped for a one-yard loss. The Chiefs took their first time out.

Lining up for fourth-and-4, Mahomes was called for a false start. Under extreme pressure on fourth-and-9, Mahomes rolled to his right — almost all the way to the sideline — and threw across his body to the opposite side of the field and Tyreek Hill, who worked back across the field to the right, and was finally pushed out of bounds at the Baltimore 12. Mahomes hit Conley for a six-yard gain, and Ware gained a yard inside. The Chiefs took another time out, and on the next play, Mahomes hit Williams for a five-yard touchdown pass, tying the game 24-24 with 53 seconds left in the game.

Another touchback started the Ravens at their 25. Jackson found Crabtree for an 11-yard gain. Jackson overthrew Brown. On second down, the Chiefs blitzed, and Justin Houston strip-sacked Jackson, and recovered the fumble at the Ravens 23-yard line.

Damien Williams was dropped for one-yard losses on two consecutive plays, and the Chiefs allowed the clock to spin down to three seconds remaining, and brought Butker on the field for a 43-yard field goal attempt. His kick was wide right — his second miss of the game — and the game went into overtime.

Overtime

The Chiefs won the toss, and started at the 25 after a touchback. Demtetrius Harris rumbled for a 15-yard gain after a short pass. Damien Williams gained three up the middle. Hill got an 18-yard completion to put the Chiefs across midfield, followed by another 15-yard completion. Mahomes threw deep to Kelce, who couldn’t bring in the pass. Passes to Hill and Kelce gave the Chiefs a first down at the Ravens 12-yard line. Under pressure, Mahomes fumbled the ball while trying to escape, but Eric Fisher fell on the ball. That brought up second-and-23. The Chiefs gained eight, but on third down, Mahomes was unable to find an open receiver, and the Chiefs had to try a field goal. Butker’s 35-yard attempt was good this time, and the Chiefs led 27-24.

Following a touchback, the Ravens started with a three-yard run. Then Jacksojn tried a deep shot to Moore, but it was nearly intercepted by Daniel Sorensen. A pass to Snead gave the Ravens a first down at their 42. Jackson ran for six yards. Dixon gained five for a first down across midfield. Dixon gained two yards just before the two minute warning was sounded.

When play resumed, Jackson — under pressure — was chased out of the pocket and run out of bounds for no gain. But Ronnie Stanley was called for holding, bringing up second-and-18. The Jackson was sacked by Ford and Houston for a four-yard loss. Jackson was injured on the play, and was replaced by Robert Griffin III. His third-and-22 pass to Brown was knocked away by Orlando Scandrick, and his fourth-and-22 pass to Snead was knocked away by Kendall Fuller, which finally sealed a 27-24 Chiefs win.

Stats Headlines

Patrick Mahomes threw for 377 yards, with 35 completions on 53 attempts, two touchdowns and an interception, compiling a passer rating of 91.5 on the day. He was sacked three times.

For the Ravens, Lamar Jackson was 13 for 24, totaling 147 yards, with no touchdowns or interceptions. His passer rating for the game was 100.5. The Chiefs sacked him three times, and he fumbled on one of those sacks.

Tyreek Hill led Chiefs receivers with 139 yards on eight receptions. Travis Kelce had 77 yards on seven catches— almost all of them in the first half — plus a touchdown, and Demarcus Robbinson had five receptions for 42 yards. Damien Williams had the other touchdown catch.

Spencer Ware rushed for 75 yards on 15 carries, plus five catches for 54 yards. Damien Williams also had a rushing rouchdown. As a team, the Chiefs gained 94 yards on the ground on 27 attempts.

The Chiefs allowed 321 total yards to the Ravens — 198 yards rushing, and 147 through the air.

Injuries

Tyreek Hill appeared to injure his wrist in the first quarter. He appeared to be in quite a bit of pain on the sideline, but returned in the second quarter. Cam Erving injured his knee in the second quarter, was left the game. Jeff Allen took over at left guard. Spencer Ware injured his shoulder late in the first half, was listed as questionable, but returned in the second half. Hill appeared to suffer another injury — this one to his heel — and went to the locker room just before the second half. He was also listed as a questionable return, but also returned in the second half.

Inactives

Safety Eric Berry, offensive linemen Kahlil McKenzie and Jimmy Murray, wide receivers Kelvin Benjamin and Sammy Watkins, running back Charcandrick West and tight end Deon Yelder were all inactive for the game.

Next week

It’s a short week for the Chiefs, who face the Los Angeles Chargers at home on Thursday Night Football in another game that has big playoff implications for both teams. Kickoff is set for 7:20 pm Arrowhead Time.
