The Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers treated us to a classic marathon, and set all sorts of World Series records in Friday night’s 3-2 win for LA that finished on Saturday morning.
Max Muncy played hero, delivering a walk-off victory with a home run off Nathan Eovaldi in the 18th inning, giving the Dodgers their first win of the series. Here are the records that were set in Game 3:
“I thought for sure that game wasn’t going to end,” Cody Bellinger said. “I thought we’d have to wake up in the morning to finish it.”
- Most combined pitchers used in a postseason game: 18; the 9 pitchers used by each team tied a postseason record.
- Most plate appearances in a World Series game: 131 combined for both teams, and 66 for the Dodgers set a single-team record.
- Most players used in a World Series game: 46 combined, beating the old record (2005 Game 3) by three; the 23 players used by each team tied the 1991 Twins (Game 3) for most players used by one team in a World Series game. The only players not used for the Dodgers and Red Sox in Game 3 were Rich Hill, Hyun-jin Ryu, Chris Sale and Drew Pomeranz.
- Both teams combined to throw an astonishing 561 pitches — 283 by the Red Sox and 278 by the Dodgers — though it’s unknown whether that is a record.
- The Dodgers are the first team in World Series history to win a game they were trailing in the 11th inning or later. The Red Sox led 2-1 in the 13th inning before the Dodgers tied it in the bottom of the inning, thanks to an errant throw from second baseman Ian Kinsler on a two-out grounder.

“I had the final out in my glove,” Kinsler told reporters.
Later today, we will have Game 4. After both teams used nine pitchers in Game 3, both the Red Sox and Dodgers have not named their starting pitchers for Saturday just yet. Stay tuned, maybe more records will be set on Saturday.
