Curt Schilling lashes out after Red Sox snub for World Series first-pitch ceremony

The Boston Red Sox invited some pivotal members of their 2004 World Series team to throw out the first pitch before Game 2 of the World Series on Wednesday night.

Among them was David Ortiz, Pedro Martinez, Kevin Millar, Tim Wakefield, Jason Varitek, Keith Foulke and Alan Embree. Even Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, who played with Boston in 2004, got a big cheer during the pregame ceremony.

But Curt Schilling, who helped the Red Sox rally from an 0-3 deficit in the ALCS against the New York Yankees on their way to a World Series title that year, was noticeably missing.

Boston Globe columnist Dan Shaughnessy tweeted that the Red Sox did not invite Schilling. The former ace still lives in Boston with his family.

“We did not reach out to him, but it was not out of spite,” Shaughnessy quoted a Red Sox executive as saying. “It was originally just going to be Pedro and David and Wake and Millar, but we heard from a few others and they are included.”

Schilling is a baseball legend with the Red Sox, and also the Arizona Diamondbacks, where he helped the team win the 2001 World Series.

After his retirement from the game, however, he has become a controversial figure for his political views and comments.

Schilling did participate in the Diamondbacks' 20th anniversary team celebration in August. He took to social media to discuss the situation with the Red Sox.

Schilling also posted a less civil Facebook post on the topic.

Schilling played for the Baltimore Orioles, Houston Astros, Philadelphia Phillies, Diamondbacks and Red Sox over the course of his 20-year MLB career.

He went 216-146 with a 3.46 ERA in his career with 3,116 strikeouts. He is eligible for the Hall of Fame, but hasn't gathered enough voted to be inducted.
