TOTTENHAM 1-2 LIVERPOOL

FT: Liverpool survive a very late scare to maintain their perfect start to the Premier League season. That’s 5/5 for Jurgen Klopp’s side, who are top of the table going into the rest of today’s fixtures.

Liverpool have won their opening five games of a top-flight season for the third time in their history (also 1990-91 and 1978-79).

94: There have been more goals scored in Premier League games between Tottenham and Liverpool than in any other fixture in the competition (152).

Son cuts inside the penalty area and delays before hitting the deck. He should have struck it first time.

TOTTENHAM 1-2 LIVERPOOL | LAMELA

93: HOLD THE PHONE! Tottenham have pulled one back deep into stoppage-time.

Liverpool are static from the corner and fail to close down Erik Lamela at the back post. He simply waits for the ball to drop before volleying it beyond Alisson.

Nerves jangling for Liverpool now!

90: Five minutes of added time? Jurgen Klopp looks disappointed with that but Roberto Firmino was down for a while with his eye injury.

Sadio Mane prods the ball through to Daniel Sturridge but he’s penalised for offside. Vorm saved it anyway.

89: Spurs fans starting to filter out the stadium now. It’s the Liverpool fans who are bouncing around and making all the noise as Trent Alexander-Arnold is replaced by Joel Matip for the closing stages.

87: Salah gets a ticking off from Jurgen Klopp after being too selfish. He’s got an unmarked Daniel Sturridge to his left but shoots through a crowd of bodies instead.

85: Here comes Daniel Sturridge. He’s on for Naby Keita, who was briefly operating as a striker.

83: Close! Tottenham may need two goals, but it’s Michel Vorm under-siege. The goalkeeper first parries away a curling effort from Mohamed Salah before blocking Sadio Mane.

80: Eric Dier down after taking a ball to the face. He’s quickly up and on his feet again.

77: Just to tidy up the substitution earlier. Liverpool brought Jordan Henderson on for Roberto Firmino, who suffered a scratch just under his eye when coming together with Trippier.

74: Spurs just can’t get anything going here. It’s slow, lethargic and fairly ineffective. Liverpool looking good for a clean sheet.

71: Jordan Henderson is on for Naby Keita, who doesn’t seem to realise it’s he who’s being replaced. In fairness, Jurgen Klopp told him to wait while Roberto Firmino receives treatment for a scratch under the eye.

The German tactician already committed to the transfer and it was announced inside the stadium - so I don’t think he will be allowed to change. Oh, he has. Henderson on for Firmino.

And there’s a huge round of applause as Son, back from the Asian Games, comes on to replace Harry Winks.

69: Christian Eriksen drifts behind the Liverpool defence and angles a drive towards goal that takes a deflection and alludes Harry Kane.

66: It should be 3-0 and game over. Sadio Mane has Keita to his left and Salah to his right but under-hits the pass to Keita, whose effort is parried over by Vorm. Jurgen Klopp just holds his arms out in frustration.

63: Nailed! Now that’s an old school challenge from Joe Gomez, who stops Lucas Moura breaking away with a solid, well-timed sliding challenge. Spurs with plenty of possession but they’ve not really troubled Van Dijk and Co.

60: Mauricio Pochettino makes a change with Erik Lamela replacing Mousa Dembele. Spurs with 30 minutes to salvage a point and prevent successive defeats.

57: Spurs look to respond when winning a corner but it’s easily cleared and Liverpool settle. “Vorm made a mess of that," said Gary Neville when describing Roberto Firmino’s goal.

TOTTENHAM 0-2 LIVERPOOL | FIRMINO

54: Jurgen Klopp is giving it the fist-pump, and that usually means one thing! Liverpool have doubled their lead at Wembley.

Sadio Mane dribbles and weaves his way into the penalty area from the left touchline before his cross across the six-yard box is fumbled by Michel Vorm, and Bobby Firmino pokes it in.

Easiest goal the Brazilian is likely to score this season. Spurs looking vulnerable as they go searching for a goal.

53: And the fun continues with a terrific surge forward from Moura. He nips beyond Gomez before lashing it low against the outside of the post.

50: This is going to be a fun 45 minutes of football. It’s all action since the restart as Mohamed Salah slips in Sadio Mane, who swivels and stings Vorm’s palms with a decent effort.

Tottenham vs Liverpool LIVE: Premier League latest score, goals and updates

49: Heart in mouth moment for Liverpool as Joe Gomez gifts the ball to Lucas Moura. The attacker drives forward but Virgil van Dijk races back to clean up the youngster’s mess.

Woodwork! Robertson’s cross clips the crossbar and Liverpool win themselves a corner which Keita volleys straight at Vorm.

48: It looks like Eric Dier has dropped deeper. Whether that’s to create a back three or allow Harry Winks to push on I’m not sure.

TOTTENHAM 0-1 LIVERPOOL

45: And after a terrible barrage of adverts on Sky, we’re back underway. If only I could find the mute button on this damn TV. Yep, I’ve turned into my father…

Anyway, neither manager has made a change but I can't imagine it'll be long before we see Son to add some pace and energy to this Tottenham attack.

TWITTER ROUND-UP

Michael: Eric Dier was touted around at £50million last summer, wasn’t he? Not good enough for Tottenham. Offers nothing.

Kevin: Another top performance so far from Joe Gomez today! Repelling anything that comes his way.

Chris: Michel Vorm showing there why a good keeper is so important. If Hugo Lloris is playing it’s still 0-0.

Nick: Am I in the twilight zone? Gini Wijnaldum has scored away from home!

Kiran: As a Spurs fan I can't bare to watch Danny Rose play anymore. Should have sold him when we had the chance. He's given the ball away with each of his last passes. Dembele looking up for it.

TOTTENHAM 0-1 LIVERPOOL

HT: Wijnaldum's header late in the first half gives Liverpool the advantage at the break. Jurgen Klopp’s side have been good value for their lead. Could and should have had more.

Incidentally, all five of Tottenham's goals conceded in the Premier League this season have been headers.

43: Wijnaldum clearly wants another. He wants another enough to ignore the unmarked Roberto Firmino to his left, who would have been able to convert into a half-empty net.

41: Georginio Wijnaldum has scored his first ever Premier League away goal, with what was his 55th shot on the road in the competition.

TOTTENHAM 0-1 LIVERPOOL | WIJNALDUM

39: And there’s the opener! I don’t think anyone could have predicted Georginio Wijnaldum to score his first ever Premier League away goal…

James Milner’s corner is flicked into the path of Wijnaldum, whose header squeezes over the line with Michel Vorm unable to claw it back.

The referee checks his watch to see if it went over the line… and it did. Comfortably.

38: Harry Winks is playing a deeper role for Spurs today. He’s not really been able to dictate play or pull any strings from inside his own half. Just sideways passing - neat enough.

35: I suppose it’s quite fitting this game is at Wembley because it feels like an FA Cup match right now. We’ve got Dembele driving forward at every opportunity, Mane weaving in and out all over the place and even Vertonghen striking from inside his own half.

Tottenham vs Liverpool LIVE: Premier League latest score, goals and updates

33: Spurs are flexing their muscles now! Danny Rose busts a gut to join the attack and lays the ball off to Dier, whose scuffed effort is deflected wide for a corner, which Firmino clears.

30: Eriksen drifts behind Keita and plays a neat one-two with Trippier before the midfielder recovers to block the cross. The summer signing follows that up by bundling Eriksen over just outside the penalty area. This is dangerous.

Eriksen steps up… saved. Quite a routine one from Alisson.

27: Spurs might have to switch to a back three soon. Rose and Trippier are so wide and advanced that Alderweireld and Vertonghen are vulnerable to the counter.

24: Mohamed Salah threads a pass forward to Roberto Firmino but Toby Alderweireld stays on his feet before making the crucial block. You sense a goal is coming folks.

21: Waste! Last season’s Mohamed Salah scores that 99 times out of 100, but he’s gone and missed it. The Egyptian pounces Eric Dier’s misplaced pass and he’s through one-on-one with Vorm. He takes a touch and hits it straight at Vorm.

Tottenham vs Liverpool LIVE: Premier League latest score, goals and updates

Tottenham vs Liverpool LIVE: Premier League latest score, goals and updates (Image: REUTERS)

18: Spurs are growing into this now. Rose and Trippier are doing most of the damage on the flanks with Dembele doing the ‘dirty’ work in midfield. Kane has been quiet.

15: No sign of Mohamed Salah this afternoon. It’s always dangerous pointing out how quiet the Egyptian has been but Spurs appear to be doing a good job of keeping him quiet.

Van Dijk and Alisson have a bit of confusion that results in the goalkeeper having to thump it straight out of play. No risky touched from the Brazil international after Leicester.

13: The flanks are going to be important today. Trippier and Rose aren’t afraid of bombing forward but Salah and Mane aren’t tracking them. Winning the ball in midfield would leave the rapid duo unmarked.

10: Trippier bends in the free-kick from the right side but Alderweireld heads it miles over from an offside position. Not his finest.

8: Penalty appeal! Spurs supporters want a penalty when Eriksen goes down in the box after a clumsy challenge from Gomez. Nothing doing for referee Michael Oliver.

5: Even though the goal was disallowed, that must have affected Spurs psychologically. They are trying to compose themselves but Liverpool keep plundering forward and win a free-kick just outside the penalty area.

2: Wow, now that’s one heck of a start. Roberto Firmino thinks he’s given Liverpool the lead inside 50 seconds when glancing home a James Milner cross. His celebrations are cut short with a correct offside decision. Sadio Mane tried to deflect it in when standing offside. He didn't touch it but the movement was enough to affect play.

Nearly again. Firmino finds some space down the right channel and his cutback is knocked out of play. Liverpool have started seriously well here.

TOTTENHAM 0-0 LIVERPOOL

1: And we’re off! Remember, three goals will ensure this becomes the Premier League's highest-scoring fixture, overtaking the 151 goals scored in games between Everton and Arsenal.

One for you statistics nerds out there…

TOP SPOT

12:28: Tottenham may have lost against Watford a few weeks ago, but they could grab top spot from Liverpool if they win by two clear goals this afternoon. City and Chelsea are playing immediately after though.

FIVE-MINUTE WARNING

12:25: Just five minutes until we’re underway folks. It’s a beautiful day in London. The sun is shining, the stadium is packed and the players have just emerged from the tunnel.

These are the perfect conditions for a goal-frenzy. What are we thinking then? I’m going for an entertaining 2-2 draw.

TWITTER ROUND-UP

Joe: Not confident in the slightest, but fingers crossed Tottenham can make my weekend by getting three points.

JP: Suspecting a high intensity draw today. The terrible international break hindering a “get the job done” streak of wins. Can’t and won’t be like last seasons episode.

Mohamed: Hitting top form right after the international break is quite difficult especially with little time for training but it's the same for them so no excuses. Time to start showing our real face and play at our best to ensure ourselves a good result. Go Liverpool!

BAD MEMORIES…

12:20: I’m sure you don’t need me to remind you what happened here last season. But I’m contractually obliged to tell you anyway…

Eleven months ago Jurgen Klopp's side were swept aside 4-1 by a rampant Tottenham leading to a bout of navel-gazing that, as it transpired, helped transform Liverpool's season.

The defensive lapses that undermined them that day were soon eradicated, the goals began to flow and with the addition of central defender Virgil van Dijk from Southampton in January, Liverpool became a force to be reckoned with.

The damage had already been done though and, just like every other contender, they never got anywhere near a Manchester City side that strolled to the Premier League title.

WINKS - THE PERFECT MIDFIELDER

12:15: Well, nearly the perfect midfielder according to Mauricio Pochettino.

The 22-year-old is on the comeback from a serious ankle injury which required surgery over the summer and curtailed his blossoming career.

"Harry has all the profile of the perfect midfielder," Pochettino said. "But I don't want to talk too much and praise him because if so his head grows big.

"His perception will be, 'Wow' and the reality is, 'You still need to improve'.

"The characteristics are perfect to play football. When we talk about midfielders - because you like to use Spanish midfielders like Xavi and Andres Iniesta - he's like this type of player, this capacity but please he needs to take in a very positive way my words.”

Xavi and Iniesta?! Poch has set the bar pretty high.

PENS PENS PENS

12:10: There have been more penalties awarded in Premier League matches between Tottenham and Liverpool than there have in any other fixture in the competition’s history (22).

So what I’m saying is that you should put a cheeky pound on James Milner scoring today…

JORDAN HENDERSON?

12:05: Quite surprising to see captain Jordan Henderson dropped for today’s game, but don’t fear - Jurgen Klopp has explained why.

"We need him so much and I don’t think it makes sense at the moment to play him day in, day out. He is still adapting a bit to the intensity and he needs his full physical strength,” Klopp said.

He’s so vital that he’s on the bench for the biggest game so far this season…

Jamie Redknapp is surprised by his omission.

“I am sure he is surprised,” the Sky Sports pundit said. “These sorts of games are the ones he would have wanted to play in. I am sure he will play against PSG and he will get plenty of game time. But the fact Naby Keita is playing ahead of him, he will be wishing he is involved."

CLOCKING UP THE MILES

12:00: Oh, well look what we have here. The statistics boffins at have provided us with some information about the recent international break.

They’ve deduced that Liverpool are the ‘big six’ team most affected by air travel across the most recent international break - clocking up a total of over 45,000 air miles over the past week!

Liverpool had 17 individuals away on international duty over the break and they covered a combined distance of 45,278 miles. This staggering figure is over 38,000 miles more than Chelsea, whose 11 internationals placed last in terms of racking up mileage.

There were a total of 75 players taking part in the recent break’s international fixtures from Tottenham, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool and the two Manchester clubs – representing a total of 28 nations, and clocking up a combined 175,449 miles since the start of the international break, which is the equivalent of seven trips around the world.

Davinson Sanchez clocked up the most miles at 14,623 for his trips from London to Venezuela and Argentina and then back as he represented Colombia.

‘THAT WOULD BE FUNNY’

11:50: Awkward. Jurgen Klopp has responded to Gary Neville after the pundit suggested Liverpool should abandon the Champions League to boost their Premier League title hopes.

Klopp found the suggestion from the 43-year-old, who having had a spell as England assistant coach was sacked after three months as Valencia boss, laughable.

"How should that work? What do we do? We don't play Champions League or what?" said Klopp. "Gary should come over and tell me exactly how that would work. You bring your kids in the Champions League? That would be funny!

"I don't want to be too critical because I don't know exactly how he said it but sitting in an office and talking about football is completely different to doing the job, to be honest.

"What did he say about Manchester United in that case? The club he's more interested in. Nothing? I don't know exactly what it means but to focus on one competition can only be if maybe you are already out of the competition nearly.

"If it's late in the season that you see you have a chance to do that or do this and all that stuff.

"Last year, for example, we had no chance to focus on one competition because we had to qualify for the Champions League and I don't think that even Gary Neville would have said: 'Quarter-finals of the Champions League, let City win'."

Matt: I actually think that having Harry Winks will be a huge help to Spurs instead of Dele Alli today. Point to prove and has skills to play passes that Lucas Moura will thrive on!

Fuzzy: Early kick offs are always a dampener on the weekend... Big games need to be on Sunday. This could well be a lethargic 0-0 draw...

Vinny: I’m so happy seeing Naby Keita back in the starting line-up for us. We were struggling to break down Leicester without him in the side. Henderson just doesn’t bring that attacking threat. Another Keita masterclass pending.

Nick: WINKSYYY!

Thanks for your contribution, Nick. Couldn't have done it without you…

TEAM NEWS - LIVERPOOL

11:40: Jurgen Klopp keeps things relatively simple for today’s trip to Wembley, and why wouldn’t he? They boast a 100 percent record.

Anyway, the German tactician makes one change with Naby Keita replacing Jordan Henderson in midfield.

Summer signing Fabinho is included in a very string bench that includes Xherdan Shaqiri, Daniel Sturridge and Joel Matip.

TEAM NEWS - TOTTENHAM

11:35: Mauricio Pochettino doesn’t like Ben Davies for big matches, apparently.

The Welsh international was dropped in favour of Danny Rose against Manchester United and he’s on the bench again today. Rose starts at left-back.

Elsewhere the injured Dele Alli and Hugo Lloris are out of contention with Michel Vorm and 22-year-old Harry Winks making their first Premier League starts of the season.

Spurs revert to a back four with Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen at the heart of the defence - Davinson Sanchez misses out.

Son returns to the bench, alongside Sanchez, Erik Lamela, Victor Wanyama and Serge Aurier.

TOTTENHAM vs LIVERPOOL

11:30: And just like magic, the line-ups have arrived. A quick glance tells me that Jurgen Klopp has brought Naby Keita back for Jordan Henderson, who is on the substitutes bench.

Tottenham XI: Vorm, Trippier, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Rose, Dier, Dembele, Winks, Eriksen, Moura, Kane.

Subs: Gazzaniga, Sanchez, Son, Lamela, Wanyama, Aurier, Davies.

Liverpool XI: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, Van Dijk, Robertson, Wijnaldum, Milner, Keita, Salah, Mane, Firmino.

Subs: Mignolet, Moreno, Matip, Fabinho, Henderson, Shaqiri, Sturridge.

CHOK-A-BLOK

11:25: I haven’t used the term “chok-a-blok” since I was about ten, but apparently a blog being read by thousands was the best time to bring it back.

What I’m trying to say is that the Premier League’s ‘big six’ are all in action this afternoon ahead of next week’s Champions League and Europa League fixtures.

It’s too early to say this could be a defining day, obviously. But an extra three points over a rival before European football arrives could be pivotal at the end of the season.

IT’S BACK!

11:20: It never really left too be honest, but that’s what people say nowadays…

Yes, the Premier League returns after it’s brief international break hibernation and we’re back with a BANG as Liverpool travel to Tottenham.

The Reds have chalked up an impressive four wins from their opening four Premier League games, while Spurs saw their own 100 per cent start end with defeat at Watford last time out.

Jurgen Klopp's men will be out to maintain that momentum and lay down a marker following last season's 4-1 defeat at Wembley.

Anyway, enough waffle from me. Team news and line-ups incoming. Standby…

TOTTENHAM vs LIVERPOOL

Tottenham will be without Hugo Lloris and Dele Alli. Goalkeeper Lloris, who was sentenced this week for drink-driving, has been ruled out for several weeks with a thigh injury while England midfielder Alli has a hamstring problem sustained during the international break. Forward Son Heung-min is back from a lengthy stint of international duty, but Moussa Sissoko is still missing (hamstring).

Liverpool midfielder Adam Lallana has been ruled out for a fortnight with a groin strain suffered on England duty. Goalkeeper Simon Mignolet has recovered from a hand injury to take his place

among the substitutes as back-up to Alisson Becker. Defender Dejan Lovren is still recovering from a hip injury, but should return in the next month.

Last season: Liverpool 2 Tottenham 2, Tottenham 4 Liverpool 1

Top scorers (all competitions): Lucas Moura (Tottenham) 3; Sadio Mane (Liverpool) 4
