Odell Beckham Jr. trade firmly on Rams' radar, but Sean McVay dances around possible deal

Speculation is growing that the G-Men could trade their star wideout. Not so fast, says USA TODAY Sports' Jarrett Bell. USA TODAY Sports

ORLANDO – Despite having already orchestrated one of the most aggressive offseasons in the league, the Los Angeles Rams might not be done yet.

The Rams are expected to make a strong attempt to trade for New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., whose already tenuous relationship with team brass appears to be worsening.

The Giants haven’t publicly said outright that they plan to trade the three-time Pro Bowl selection, although co-owner John Mara on Sunday expressed fatigue over discussing Beckham’s off-field activities and his potential decision to hold out this offseason if he doesn’t receive a contract extension. Asked about potentially trading Beckham, Mara said that no player, even Beckham, is untouchable. On Monday, co-owner Steve Tisch called the possibility of a Beckham trade “background noise,” and declined to say if the team had engaged in any talks to this point.

However, the Rams do indeed have interest in adding the wide receiver if the Giants do decide to make him available, according to a person with knowledge of the team’s deliberations. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the subject.

Adding Beckham would help fill a void created when wide receiver Sammy Watkins, who had eight touchdown catches last season, departed for the Kansas Chiefs on a three year, $48 million contract earlier this month. It also would give an already explosive offense one of the best weapons in the game.

Asked Tuesday morning about the possibility of pursuing Beckham, Rams head coach Sean McVay said, “We don’t talk about anybody that’s on contract with another team, but I think if there is one thing that you can appreciate that we’ve done this offseason and the way we look at it organizationally is, there’s no trade that we wouldn’t explore or look into if we feel like we could upgrade as a team.”

Probed under a hypothetical pretense about what a player like Beckham would add to the Rams’ offense, McVay said, “hypothetically, I think a player of his caliber can really do everything. But like we said, we don’t really get into the situation of discussing players that are on another team, just out of respect for tampering and what can come with that.”

With a contract extension yet to materialize, Beckham is in line to play on the exercised fifth-year option on his rookie contract, meaning he will make approximately $8.46 million this season. Per a report from NFL Network's Ian Rapoport Beckham intends to hold out this offseason if he doesn't receive a new deal.

However, hurting his case was the online video that surfaced this month, depicting Beckham in bed with a woman with what resembled potentially illegal substances.

Asked about that incident, Mara told reporters, “I'm tired of answering questions about Odell's behavior and what the latest incident is. “I think he knows what we expect of him. Now it's up to him. I still believe he'll be able to show him what we expect of him."

When asked about Beckham on Tuesday morning, new Giants coach Pat Shurmur said only, “He’s on our team right now.”

Los Angeles this offseason has traded for standout cornerbacks Aqib Talib and Marcus Peters, and the team on Monday agreed to terms with five-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh.

“The one thing that you can respect and as I continue to navigate just getting into this situation and what it entails is the respect that I have for is that executives Les (Snead), Kevin (Demoff) and Tony (Pastoors), and even (owner) Mr. (Stanley) Kroenke do such a great job of exploring all avenues to upgrade our football team, whatever way that is, if it’s trades, if it’s free agency, if it’s through the draft or re-signing our own, those are the things we’re going to explore and things we’re going to do," McVay said. "And I think one of the things that being able to play in such a unique environment and atmosphere like L.A., it provides us the opportunity to take advantage of that, and that’s something we want to be proactive about, and that’s where we’re at right now.”
