Boston radio host suspended for racist impression of Tom Brady's agent

A day after one WEEI listener caused controversy in Boston, one of its high-profile employees did the same.

Christian Fauria, a former NFL tight end who is a co-host of “Ordway, Merloni and Fauria” on WEEI, mocked Tom Brady’s agent, Don Yee, with a racist Asian accent Friday during the show. The radio station has suspended him for five days.

“Earlier today I made a horrible attempt at humor,” Fauria tweeted Friday. “In a segment during the show, I impersonated agent Don Yee in an insensitive and regrettable way. I want to publicly apologize to Don and anyone in the audience who heard it.

“I have also reached out to Don directly to personally apologize. I have been disciplined by WEEI management and I fully support their decision.”

The show was discussing a column that ran in the Boston Herald by Ron Borges. A random fan, reportedly a guy who calls into WEEI as “Nick in Boston” duped Borges by making the columnist believe he was Yee in a text conversation. The con artist told Borges that Brady, in light of the five-year, $137.5 million contract signed by former Patriots backup Jimmy Garoppolo with the 49ers, wanted a better deal and was willing to sit out offseason team activities until he got one.

Borges wrote a column about it for the Herald. The paper had to remove the story from its website and apologize for the false report. Borges has been suspended.

Fauria spent 13 seasons in the NFL, including four with the Patriots. He has also been the Patriots’ TV analyst during preseason games on local broadcasts.

“Earlier today during his show, Christian Fauria impersonated athlete agent, Don Yee in an insensitive and ill-conceived attempt at humor. We regret Christian’s commentary and we apologize to Mr. Yee and those offended by the segment,” WEEI said in a statement on its official Twitter feed. “We do not support or condone Christian’s comments, and we have suspended him for five days effective immediately.”
