Austrian snowboarder Markus Schairer broke the fifth cervical vertebra in his neck during a frightening fall in the men’s snowboard cross quarter-finals Thursday at the Pyeongchang Olympics.
Schairer landed with full force on his back, with his head snapping back and hitting the ground. His goggles flew off and he lay on the ground for a few moments before getting to his feet. After Schairer was examined at a hospital, the Austrian Olympic Committee announced that he had suffered no neurological issues and was in stable condition.
He is expected to be taken back to Austria for further evaluation and treatment.
Schairer, 30, was in fourth place on the next-to-last jump. He had crashed on an earlier run, hurting his elbow.
The races toward the end of the competition were filled with wipeouts and crashes.
Cameron Bolton of Australia was shown on TV before the race getting what looked like a splint duct-taped this left arm before he attempted to race in the small final for seventh through 12th places.
Canadian Chris Robanske and Russian Nikolay Olyunin were unable to race in the small final because of their semi-final crashes. Olyunin, the silver medalllist in the event in Sochi, was taken from the course bundled in a medical transport sled. The Russian news service TASS reported that he had a suspected broken leg.
Robanske appeared to be injured when he fell and another competitor’s snowboard crashed into his back. There has been no further word on his condition.
France’s Pierre Vaultier defended his Sochi gold medal despite being involved in the semifinal crash that took out Olyunin. Vaultier was able to get back to his feet and finish third in the semifinal, claiming the last qualifying spot.
