It wasn’t pretty for the majority of the game, and it came down to the final play, but the Buffalo Bills came alive late in the game and the defense held on for a win against the injury-riddled New York Giants, 14-9.
The Giants led — and even shut out the Bills — for the first three quarters inside Highmark Stadium, but the offensive power of Buffalo finally woke up in the fourth quarter with back-to-back touchdown scores while the defense kept New York away from the end zone for the entirety of the game.
The Giants drove down the field in the final minutes of the game, and were one yard away from winning it in the final play of the game, but were unable to convert the goal line play.
After a subpar first half, quarterback Josh Allen was back to his superstar self in the second half, with nearly half (82) of his 169 passing yards coming on the two touchdown drives. Tyrod Taylor also had a solid game while playing in-place of injured starter Daniel Jones, as the veteran signal caller was 24-for-36 with 200 yards passing and 23 yards rushing on five carries.
The defensive stop moved Buffalo to 4-2 on the season, while the Giants lost their fourth straight game of the season and are now 1-5. — Jordan Mendoza
NFL STATS CENTRAL: The latest NFL scores, schedules, odds, stats and more.
Bills vs. Giants highlights
What was anticipated to be a Bills blowout turned into a ground-it-out, yard-by-yard, chippy and occasionally sloppy thriller that wasn’t decided until the final play, and on an untimed down.
Bills vs. Giants winners and losers
WINNERS
Bills defense vs. Giants in end zone: Buffalo took advantage of the Giants being shorthanded on offense. The Bills kept the Giants out of the end zone, including on New York’s final possession. The Giants went 0-5 in the red zone.
The Bills defense gave up just nine points, their second fewest in a game this season. The good outing was needed because Buffalo’s offense was out of sync for much of the contest.
Bills WR Stefon Diggs: Diggs had a game-high 10 catches for 100 yards. He was targeted 16 times. Bills QB Josh Allen had 30 total pass attempts.
Bills CB Taron Johnson: Johnson might’ve gotten away with a hold on the game’s final play, but he was the best player in Buffalo’s secondary.
Johnson tallied 15 tackles and a controversial but big pass breakup.
Giants LB Bobby Okereke: It seemed like Okereke was always around the football on Sunday night. Okereke had a season-high 11 tackles, two tackles for loss and two pass deflections.
Saquon Barkley: Barkley was active Sunday night after missing the past three games.
Barkley showed why he’s the Giants’ best offensive player. Barkley had a couple explosive runs, including a 34-yard scamper that served as the team’s longest run of the season.
The Giants running back finished with 24 carries and 93 rushing yards. Given the circumstances, a banged up offensive line and time inactive, Barkley had a quality performance.
LOSERS
Giants offense in the end zone: The Giants offense hasn’t scored a touchdown since Week 3. They had a chance to win the game on their final possession but again failed to reach the end zone. The Giants finished a terrible 0-5 in the red zone.
Giants' offensive line: The Giants entered Week 6 with a patchwork offensive line, and it was apparent.
The Giants were without offensive linemen Andrew Thomas, John Michael Schmitz and Matt Peart. Then tackle Joshua Ezeudu injured his toe and was ruled out early on.
The unit struggled to pass block. Quarterback Tyrod Taylor often had to use his legs to extend plays, however, his efforts barely resulted in positive plays.
Taylor was sacked three times.
In Week 4, the Giants offense gave up 11 sacks. Many of those sacks were on the O-line. New York’s offensive line was better in Week 6, but there are still issues upfront.
Bills kicker Tyler Bass: Bass missed two field goals, including a 53-yard attempt with a little over a minute remaining that would’ve given the Bills a 17-9 advantage. — Tyler Dragon
Bills survive on last play
Down 14-9 with no time on the clock, a pass interference penalty gave the Giants an untimed down at Buffalo’s one-yard line.
On the game-deciding play, Giants quarterback Tyrod Taylor took the snap under center, he lofted a pass to tight end Darren Waller in the back on the end zone but it was broken up by Bills cornerback Taron Johnson.
Johnson appeared to tug on Waller’s jersey a little, but the refs didn’t throw a flag as the Bills celebrated the victory. — Tyler Dragon
Bills miss field goal
New York has a chance to win it.
The Giants needed to force a three-and-out to have a chance, and not only did they get it, but Bills kicker Tyler Bass missed a 53-yard field goal to make it an eight-point game. With one timeout, New York gets the ball. — Jordan Mendoza
Bills get late fourth down stop
The Bills defense hasn’t cracked all game, and they came up with a big stop as they can feel another win coming soon.
After taking the lead at 14-9, Buffalo forced a fourth down play for the Giants while in their own territory. Tyrod Taylor attempted a deep pass to Darius Slayton, but he couldn’t hold onto it while the Bills secondary played tight on the receiver. The Bills now get the ball at the Giants' 38-yard line with 1:45 left, but New York has all three timeouts. — Jordan Mendoza
Bills 14, Giants 9: Josh Allen-to-Quintin Morris TD puts Buffalo back on top
It’s going back-and-forth in Buffalo late in the fourth quarter.
It was a drive the Buffalo Bills have been known for, they capped off a 12-play, 75-yard drive with a dart from Josh Allen to tight end Quintin Morris for a 15-yard touchdown pass to reclaim the lead at 14-9 with under four minutes left to go.
Not only was it the first touchdown catch of the season for Morris, but it was his first catch of the season. — Jordan Mendoza
Giants 9, Bills 7: New York reclaims lead with 10 minutes left
After Buffalo took its first lead of the game, New York marched into Buffalo territory looking for its first touchdown of the game.
It got to third and inches and the Buffalo 11-yard line, but Tyrod Taylor was unable to connect with any receiver for the conversion. The Giants decided to play it safe, and Graham Gano knocked in a 29-yard field goal to give New York a 9-7 lead with 10:35 left in the game. — Jordan Mendoza
Bills 7, Giants 6: Buffalo scores to open fourth quarter, takes lead
After three quarters – and a wild scuffle near the goalline – the Buffalo Bills are finally on the board and in the lead.
On third and goal from the 3-yard line, Deonte Harty motioned into the backfield and ran a wheel route into wide open territory, and Josh Allen dumped it off to the five-year veteran for Buffalo’s first score of the game. Tyler Bass then knocked in the extra point to give the Bills a 7-6 lead.

Bills, Giants get into shoving match near end zone
The Bills and Giants got into a big skirmish in the red zone.
It all started after Bills running back Latavius Murray was tackled after a short run. Giants pass rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux got tangled up with Bills tackle Dion Dawkins on the bottom of the pile. Their dust up led to several players getting into a shoving match that last a few moments.
The officials eventually got things under controlled and called unnecessary roughness penalties on Thibodeaux, Dawkins, Giants defensive end Leonard Williams and Giants defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence. All unnecessary roughness penalties were offset. — Tyler Dragon
Giants blunder before halftime, still lead
When playing on the road with your backup quarterback, you got to get points on every opportunity.
The Giants failed just before halftime.
New York got to the 1-yard line with 14 seconds left after a pass interference call, but they had no timeouts. The Giants then questionably ran the ball with Saquon Barkley, who was stuffed and the offense tried to get back in formation to run another play, but the clock expired and ended with both teams going to the break. Despite the miscue, New York still has a surprising 6-0 lead over the Bills, and will get the ball out of the locker room.
New York has slightly outgained the Bills with 143 yards, as Buffalo has only 142 yards of offense. Statistically Tyrod Taylor has outplayed Josh Allen; Taylor is 10-for-14 with 117 yards while Allen is 8-for-18 with 87 yards and one interception.

Josh Allen throws interception
Another turnover has added to what has been a disastrous first half for the Bills.
Once again driving into Giants territory, Bills quarterback Josh Allen was looking to find Dawson Knox running across the field, but it got tipped and ended up in the hands of New York linebacker Micah McFadden, the second turnover the Giants have forced today.

Bills running back Damien Harris was injured with a little over three minutes remaining in the second quarter when he was tackled on a one-yard run up the middle.
Harris remained on the ground as concerned players from both teams looked on. Harris was eventually placed on a stretcher and loaded onto an ambulance. Harris gave the crowd a thumbs up as he was placed on the stretcher. — Tyler Dragon
Josh Allen leaves game for two plays
The Bills received a small scare surrounding their star quarterback.
After getting hit on a roughing the passer penalty with under five minutes left in the second quarter, Allen left the field and went inside the blue medical tent for an undisclosed reason as Buffalo fans held their breath.
Backup Kyle Allen came in relief, handing the ball off on consecutive plays for two runs. After the second play, Josh Allen ran out of the tent and back onto the field, much to the pleasure of the crowd in Highmark Stadium. — Jordan Mendoza
Giants 6, Bills 0: Graham Gano adds another field goal
After Buffalo’s missed field goal, the Giants went on a nine-play, 34-yard drive to get into scoring position.
The Giants once again weren’t able to reach the end zone, but kicker Graham Gano made a 43-yard field goal to extend New York’s lead, 6-0.

Bills miss field goal, still scoreless
The Buffalo offense is still not on the board.
The Bills had another drive of getting into New York territory, but it stalled at the 34-yard line. After punting when in the area the first time, Buffalo elected to send out Tyler Bass to kick a field goal.
The ball ended up carrying right and missed, as it was Bass’ first miss of the season. He came into the game making all nine of his previous attempts this season. — Jordan Mendoza
Justin Pugh: Straight off the couch
NBC’s Sunday Night Football is famous for their player introductions. Players traditionally state their name and the college they attended during pregame intros.
Giants offensive lineman Justin Pugh had a clever and honest introduction.
“Justin Pugh, straight off the couch,” Pugh said.
Pugh kept it real. The veteran offensive lineman was a free agent but the Giants’ signed Pugh to their practice squad on Oct. 4. The Giants elevated Pugh to the active roster on Saturday.

Bills offense stalls
One quarter in and Buffalo can’t seem to break through the Giants defense.
After a three-and-out and fumble on their first two drives, the Bills generated some offense thanks to a big 28-yard pass from Josh Allen to Stefon Diggs. Buffalo got to the New York 37-yard line, but had three straight plays of no gain, resulting in a fourth down. Rather than try to kick what would be around a 54-yard field goal, the Bills punted the ball away, drawing some boos from the home crowd. — Jordan Mendoza
Joshua Ezeudu injured
The Giants are running thin along their offensive line.
Lineman Joshua Ezeudu suffered a toe injury during the first quarter Sunday night. Initially, the Giants indicated that Ezeudu was questionable to return, but he was later downgraded to out.

Giants 3, Bills 0: New York capitalizes on turnover
The Giants scored first on Sunday night.
After a defensive takeaway, the Giants were able to cover 45 yards in 12 plays to get into the red zone. Their drive stalled at Buffalo’s 11-yard line, but Giants kicker Graham Gano made a 29-yard field goal to give the club a 3-0 first-quarter lead.

Giants force early fumble
Two possessions in and the New York Giants defense is holding up against the electric Bills offense.
After both teams opened the game with a three-and-out, the Bills were trying to generate some momentum on offense as they approached midfield five minutes into the second quarter. However, receiver Gabe Davis wasn’t able to hold onto the ball after it was punched out, and New York picked it up for the first turnover of the game. — Jordan Mendoza

Five offseason moves that already look regrettable in 2023
When NFL teams botch an offseason move, it doesn't always take long for them to own up to the mistake and move on. Last week alone, two teams orchestrated trades to part with marquee acquisitions from the 2022 offseason.
That got us thinking about what recent moves are already showing troublesome signs. Did the Giants jump the gun by going all in on Daniel Jones?
Read our staff's answers here.
Did Bills botch their travel plans to London?
Buffalo's offense was lethargic to begin its 25-20 loss to Jacksonville in Week 5. The Bills punted on their first four possessions and didn't pick up a first down until there were 12 seconds left in the first quarter. They had 29 yards of offense in the first quarter and didn't seem to wake up until the fourth quarter.
Bills players and head coach Sean McDermott were asked if they should've taken their Transatlantic flight sooner, and if fatigue contributed to the stagnant start.
McDermott said the Bills didn't have enough energy to start the game and that he needs to re-evaluate everything because their arrival and performance didn't work.
