Saban talks Vols, Bryce Young’s effectiveness on ‘Hey Coach’ - AL.com

Alabama fans may be planning to smoke ‘em if you got ‘em this weekend. It’s Alabama-Tennessee and one of the longest-running rivalries in the conference meeting again.

Saban previewed the Volunteers and talked about the No. 3 Tide along with the latest on Bryce Young, some talk on the offensive line with Peewee from Grand Bay and a breakdown of the Vols’ offense.

Here’s a rewind of Saban’s appearance on “Hey Coach.”

Segment 1

--Saban said you just have to “do what you do” in relationship building and “give more than you take” and “help more than you receive,” when giving advice for a marriage.

--Saban said there was a lot of “self-indulgent” behavior against Texas A&M and cited the turnovers as “critical.” In games like this, Saban said your best is required. He cited a pyramid of success in the team facility on how to be your best teammate and create the best team.

The Tide are nine-point favorites against the Vols.

--Saban said he doesn’t look at the margin of victory, but rather if the team has risen to the standard it sets for itself in getting better each week.

--Peewee from Grand Bay thinks it’s going to be louder in Neyland Stadium this weekend than it was at Texas during Week 2. Saban said the center position has been key and Alabama has to “starter” type players with Seth McLaughlin and Darrion Dalcourt, who have split time this season. “I’m pleased with those two guys, it’s not an issue, I just hope both could stay healthy.”

--Saban cited Tennessee’s “quick” run defense and the unit’s ability to stunt on the line of scrimmage to get success. “I don’t think this is going to be a 10-9 game, is what I’m trying to say.”

Segment 2

--Saban questioned how the public found out about the “cheetah” package’s name with one defensive lineman and three outside linebackers. Saban said Will Anderson, Dallas Turner and Chris Braswell as three really good pass rushers. “I’m not going to name the other ones, you already know that one.”

“You have to be careful from an administrative standpoint how you manage (subbing).”

--Saban gave a technical breakdown on Alabama’s secondary position when a young safety from a Georgia team in-attendance asked him about the Tide’s safety play. He cited the three critical factors of being a defensive back — play the ball in the deep ball of the field, tackle well, play good man-to-man coverage — and said if the kid does that, maybe Saban will come to visit him someday.

--Saban again covered the coverage variations on Texas A&M’s close throwing touchdown and the last play of the game. The flip of the coverage responsibilities allowed for Evan Stewart to be covered up by Terrion Arnold.

Segment 3

--Saban was asked about the frequency of pass interference calls and ever the defensive back coach, Saban broke down back-shoulder throws and the struggles cornerbacks have when a receiver turns to the side to bend back to the ball and the defender has to play through them. Saban said a few teams they’ve played have been “rewarded” for underthrown passes that lead to penalties.

--Saban said that players and players’ parents will sometimes care about what the media writes about them. “Now they wanna go prove these people are wrong,” Saban said players should focus on the process and what they can control.

--Bryce Young has practiced some this week and Saban said it comes down to if he can throw the ball effectively enough. He’s done it “on a limited basis.”

“I know he wants to play. I know he thinks he can play.”

Segment 4

--Saban said in a loud environment like Neyland Stadium, players shouldn’t make the fans “relevant,” by showing they affect you and impact the game.

--Saban made it a point to tell people to donate to Florida-based aid in the aftermath of Hurricane Ian.
