Paul Chryst is shockingly out at Wisconsin. From Leonard to Doeren, several are in the mix - The Athletic

In a move that seemed to sneak up almost out of nowhere given Paul Chryst’s record entering this season, Wisconsin fired the longtime head coach despite Chryst’s 67-26 record. The move clears the way to give favorite son Jim Leonhard a full audition running the Badgers program, and that’s why The Athletic has heard the coaching change was made now.

Leonhard receives seven regular-season games and probably a bowl game to make his case to keep the job. He’s been a fantastic defensive coordinator and has turned down significant money to stay in Madison. His seven-game stint doesn’t feature a single ranked opponent at this time. The hunch here is he’ll have a very, very good chance to prove he deserves the job. Going 5-2 or better, and showing he can spark the offense, likely would seem good enough.

But if Leonhard doesn’t end up with job, things will get very interesting.

Lance Leipold, head coach, Kansas

If you’re a Nebraska fan, you probably should root for the Badgers to go on a roll and win out, aside from the Nov. 19 game in Lincoln. The reason: One of the Cornhuskers’ top targets we hear, Kansas’ Lance Leipold, is a Wisconsin native who won six Division III national titles in the state.

Would Leipold, a former Nebraska assistant, opt for Nebraska over Wisconsin? We’re not so sure of that, but if Leonhard does well, it might become a moot point. Regardless, Leipold’s stock is soaring right now after the remarkable turnaround he’s done at Kansas.
