Nobody could have predicted what unfolded in the first quarter of the Red River Showdown between No. 21 Texas and No. 6 Oklahoma.
Texas dominated the first quarter at the Cotton Bowl on Saturday, scoring two touchdowns in the first two minutes of the game and finished the half leading 38-20.
On Texas’ first offensive snap, Xavier Worthy caught a screen pass from Casey Thompson and ran 75 yards for a touchdown. Then the Longhorns forced a punt on Oklahoma’s ensuing possession, blocked it and recovered the ball at the Sooners’ 2-yard line. Bijan Robinson then punched in a 2-yard touchdown run to give Texas a 14-0 lead
Thompson then hooked up with receiver Joshua Moore for two touchdown passes (one for 10 yards and another for 48) to cap off a dominant first quarter for the Longhorns.
The Longhorns continued to roll in the second quarter. Just as Oklahoma started to make a dent in Texas’ lead, the Longhorns forced a fumble from Sooners quarterback Spencer Rattler. Then, Bijan Robinson ran for 50 yards to set up another Texas touchdown.
Fans, media and alumni from both schools reacted to an insane first half in the all-important rivalry game. Here are some of the highlights.
I see you Bijan! That run made me stand up out of my seat and that #5 look good on you! 🔥

BIJAN ROBINSON IS THE BEST PLAYER IN COLLEGE FOOTBALL. Period.

Spencer Rattler is fumbling the bag right now
— Robert Griffin III (@RGIII) October 9, 2021
Y’all laughed when I said Bijan Robinson was closest I’d seen to Reggie Bush.
Y’all mocked when I said Bijan was best Texas Running Back since Ricky Williams…
Welp, Bijan has done more talking with his play than i ever could with my words!
— Emmanuel Acho (@EmmanuelAcho) October 9, 2021
Bijan Robinson is the best football player in America.
— Scott Bell (@ScottBellDMN) October 9, 2021
Spencer Rattler tricked the recruiting services?
— Chris Williamson (@CWilliamson44) October 9, 2021
Pretty boring first quarter, all things considered. Only:
- 35 points scored
- 289 yards of offense
- a 75-yard TD on the first play of the game
- a blocked punt by Texas
- an 85-yard punt by Oklahoma
- a frickin' fox running around on the fieldIt's a 28-7 Texas lead after Q1.

This may be the most back Texas has ever been. Holy shit what a start
— Big Cat (@BarstoolBigCat) October 9, 2021
Bijan just got one of his first Heisman highlights. That's a 51-yard run.
— Brian Davis (@BDavisAAS) October 9, 2021
Bijan for Heisman if we’re being honest.
Good grief, he’s special.
— David Helman (@HelmanDC) October 9, 2021
Bijan’s Heisman moment is going to be bailing Texas out of this game.
— Burnt OUSucks Nation (@BON_SBNation) October 9, 2021
Spencer Rattler just isn’t a very good college football player.
— Brandon Walker (@BWalkerSEC) October 9, 2021
First quarter: Texas 214 yards, OU 75.

Death, taxes, and Spencer Rattler throwing a pick to the middle of the field
— Hook'em Headlines (@HookemHeadlines) October 9, 2021
Even if they somehow come back, this game is confirming what we already knew: Oklahoma has been overrated all season long.
