Doug Pederson didn’t want to get into the specifics of his conversations with Carson Wentz and Jalen Hurts after making the decision to start Hurts this week.
But he did inform both quarterbacks on Monday night.
On Wednesday, Wentz made his first public comments since the news broke and he’s handling the benching in a typically classy fashion.
That’s Wentz responding to 13-year-old Giovanni Hamilton, who sent Wentz a message of support in the wake of the news. Despite Wentz’s getting benched, Hamilton still calls him his hero and said he wasn’t surprised to see Wentz cheering on Hurts after Hurts’ touchdown throw on Sunday.
In fact, Hamilton says he’ll be cheering on Hurts this weekend because he’s an Eagle and because of the example Wentz set on Sunday.
Hamilton, who was profiled in this great ESPN story, has Schwartz-Jampel syndrome and has undergone many surgeries during his young life. He has been drawn to Wentz because of the quarterback’s past of coming back from injuries and setbacks of his own.
Wentz has struggled mightily this season and Pederson eventually came to the decision to bench him during the Packers game and now for the start of the Saints game. Pederson still thinks Wentz can get back to his previous high level of play; we’ll see.
Pederson also said he expects Wentz to be a professional throughout this process, to support Hurts and to continue to be a leader.
If Wentz’s first public comments are any indication, that won’t be a problem.
