The Washington Football Team pulled off one of the upsets of the year on Monday by shocking the previously undefeated Pittsburgh Steelers in their own building, 23-17. But three of those points arguably should have never been on the board.
At the end of the first half, Washington was driving down the field with a chance to score, but QB Alex Smith took two consecutive sacks. With no timeouts left and a running clock, Washington had to rush the field-goal unit on before time expired, and it looked as though they wouldn’t be able to get the kick off before the half ended.
Then, the clock stopped, and the cameras flashed to the officials (and players) looking bewildered. The officials said there was an “administrative issue” and rewound the clock to eight seconds, giving Washington kicker Dustin Hopkins enough time to successfully kick a field goal – three points that turned out to be crucial.
The cause of the “administrative issue” became clear on replay – Smith ran off the field with the ball immediately after being sacked, the officials didn’t know what happened to it, and therefore couldn’t spot it.
Former official Terry McAulay told Pro Football Talk that despite the confusion, officials aren’t supposed to stop the clock when the offense’s actions create a delay in the game. The officials usually bring out a different football for field-goal attempts, but not in situations where time is about to expire, as was the case in Monday’s game.
Smith said after the game that taking the ball off the field was “not intentional” – but it still gave his team an advantage they probably shouldn’t have had in a close, important game.
