Colby Covington has no regrets about Matt Hughes ‘train’ comments, Hughes, Robbie Lawler respond - MMA Fighting

Colby Covington threw hundreds of strikes in his win over Robbie Lawler on Saturday, but he had one more shot to fire after the fight.

Following a dominant performance in the main event of UFC on ESPN 5 in Newark, New Jersey, Covington used a portion of his post-fight mic time to take a crack at Lawler and Lawler’s longtime friend, welterweight great Matt Hughes.

“Let’s talk about the lesson we learned tonight that Robbie should have learned from his good buddy Matt Hughes,” Covington said to interviewer Jon Anik. “You stay off the tracks when the train is coming through, junior.

“Doesn’t matter if it’s the Trump train or the Colby train, stay out the way.”

The “train” comment was in reference to a June 2017 incident in which Hughes was severely injured when his truck was struck by a train at a rail crossing. Speaking to the media backstage at Prudential Center, Covington was asked if he had any regrets about what he said to Anik. He declined to apologize, instead bringing up Hughes’s recent legal troubles as a seeming justification for his remark.

“Not at all,” Covington said. “Did I say something that was offensive? The guy’s done some pretty crappy stuff, he’s got lawsuits against his family, against his brother, I just said the truth, I’m honest. I’m a little bit brutally honest sometimes and people can’t handle it.

“If people were worried about words but we go in the Octagon to kill each other, don’t be so sensitive, snowflakes.”

Shortly after Covington’s in-cage interview, Hughes offered a response via social media in which he seemed to shrug off Covington’s comment:

“Not sure if Colby Covington should have used my accident as fuel for his post-fight trash talk, but that was one heck of a fight,” Hughes wrote. “Nice win for American Top Team, and Robbie Lawler always puts on a good fight.

“Reminder though, this is the fighting world. People trash talk and you gotta have thick skin.”

Lawler was also asked about the comments backstage and like Hughes, he didn’t take them as anything to get too excited over.

“I couldn’t even really hear what he said. Guys are crossing the line, it seems like the media loves it, they eat it up, so that’s for you guys to write about and have your own opinions on it,” Lawler said.

“It’s not for me to have an opinion, everyone wants to see what I have to say. What do you guys have to say about it? So it is what it is, I’m just worried about myself as usual.”
