Football is back!
Well, at least in a sense. On Thursday night, 11 NFL games featuring (some) NFL players took place around the league.
Here are six takeaways after watching all the action.
Baker Mayfield? Deshaun Watson? Ranking Jets’ Sam Darnold among NFL’s best young quarterbacks
Sam Darnold hype is through the roof, but where would the New York Jets quarterback rank among the best young QBs in the NFL?
1. Daniel Jones reality doesn’t match perception: Maybe, just maybe the anti-Jones mob was over the top on draft night. There’s a chance this turns into the Giants version of what Kristaps Porzingis was for the Knicks: Roundly mocked on draft night only to watch the prospect become a young star. Jones looked poised, and ready to play this season.
2. Sam Darnold is ready to join the special young quarterbacks: Watch Darnold move in the pocket, deliver strikes and command Adam Gase’s offense. It’s what Jets fans have been dreaming on, and rightfully so. By season’s end, Darnold will be considered among the best young signal callers in the sport.
3. The Eagles have a major quarterback depth issue: Nate Sudfeld is gone, and potentially for an extended period. Rookie Clayton Thorson looked nowhere near ready to compete in an actual game. Cody Kessler is, well, Cody Kessler. With a starting quarterback that’s missed over 31 percent of his games dating back to his final year of college, this is an issue that will likely become a big one during the season.
4. Kyler Murray is must-watch television: When the No. 1 pick is on the field, you can’t take your eyes off the Arizona Cardinals. Mistakes will be made and losses will ensue this year, but there’s something special about how Murray can throw the ball and make plays.
5. Dwayne Haskins isn’t ready: 8-of-14, 2 INT for the Washington rookie vs. Cleveland. NFL teams are often willing to rush rookie signal callers into game action, but Haskins looks like a work in progress right now.
6. Buffalo’s defense will be legit: Keep an eye on the Bills as a sleeper in 2019, and defense will be a big reason why. Head coach Sean McDermott has built a big, fast unit capable of matching up with almost any offense.
