LeBron James hasn’t spoken publicly in about a month, but his camp certainly has an opinion on Lakers coach Luke Walton’s future.
According to ESPN’s Jackie MacMullan during an appearance on the Brian Windhorst & The Hoop Collective podcast, James’ camp has been vocal about their desire for a new coach in Los Angeles.
MacMullan said there is a lot of “tension” surrounding the Lakers and the people around James have made it known they “would prefer a coaching change” and have not been “subtle” about it. Windhorst called the assessment “a fair thing to say.”
The Lakers are currently 25-24 overall, 4-6 in their past 10 games and sit two games behind the Clippers for the eighth seed in the West. James has not played since he suffered a groin injury versus the Warriors on Christmas Day.
Walton, who received the 100 percent backing of controlling owner Jeanie Buss, has already navigated through some rocky times. He was admonished by Lakers president Magic Johnson after the team’s 2-5 start. There were reports in November of James ignoring Walton’s play calls – something the Lakers denied – and another report earlier this month that if the Lakers followed up a loss to the Cavaliers with one to the Bulls, the slide may have been used to push for Walton to be fired.
